Octavia Spencer had a big night and she couldn't have looked better. This was a great cut that fit her impeccably and--normally though I hate shiny and neutral--she brings a real charm to it. Also: the sleeves? How do they work? They do, that's how.
I'd like to begin with an apology: Milla's outfit was everything I hated about red carpet fashion.
First off, of fucking course it was Elie Saab. Second, a long, narrow, sparkly column is my least favorite red carpet look in the world. Third, "old Hollywood glamour" beauty is the most overdone, obvious thing an actress can work--finger waves! matte red lipstick!--she even went a little heavyhanded on that blush.
...But goddamnit if Leeloo doesn't look incredible. That's a supermodel for you.
Remember when I predicted Chastain would wear some boring Elie Saab and that I wished she'd just wear showstopping McQueen?!
Granted, this McQueen was a little more straight-laced then the one I yearned for, but still... Chastain's choice was like Christmas for at least one sad, deeply lonely fashion blogger.

Okay, not exactly thrilling but there's a clean elegance to this Jean Paul Gaultier that I support.
You guys, positive reinforcement: this may be the best Tina's ever looked on the red carpet and if that's the case, I'm giving her a best dressed vote. It fits. It's a lovely color. It's way pretty. Just like her.
Like Tina, we're including Michelle here with a few caveats. First of all, it felt wrong to snub all the lead actresses.
Second of all, where the fuck were southern California's tailors this year? Were they all on vacation? It seemed like a lot of looks were utterly ruined by extremely ill-fitting busts (in particular): Rooney Mara's was a droopy mess, Natalie Portman was swimming in hers, Viola Davis' was too... everything.
Michelle's dress wasn't the memorable statement we hoped for, but it was interesting and quite the color. Additionally, it fit her well and she pulled off a damn peplum. She worked this enough that we're giving it to her.
So, the only person who throws Paltrow more shade than me is Gabe Delahaye and god bless him.
...But damn you, Paltrow, this is what the Oscars are about: it's a huge fucking risk and it paid off and it's bold, fresh, daring, etc. It is chic as all get out. She looks phenomenal. Sorry haters (/me).
HEAR ME OUT.
Charlene is a stylish, beautiful athlete and she pull off a lot! Normally, she goes for ferociously tailored stuff and the relaxed silhouette of her custom Akris gown was a big surprise. Also, that neckline with her neck and those shoulders? Perfect.
If this is the one that commenters are going to take my behind the shed over, so be it. I think she looks fantastic.
This is my pick for best dress of the whole show.
Esperanza manages to be elegant, effortless and interesting all at once while--and perhaps this is the most impressive aspect--looking like herself.
I get sick of every red carpet looking like it was styled by the same 5 people, so Spalding's originality really pushed this over for me.
We loved everything: the pale but striking color, the fit, the contrasting texture of the bodice and the skirt...
Some people said this looked prom-y. They are lying about the quality of their proms.
