Kelly Osbourne, never one to refrain from speaking her mind, was covering the Oscars red carpet for E! last night and made a controversial remark about Jennifer Lopez‘s impressively hideous Zuhair Murad gown. Stylist Jessica Paster and ringwraith Giuliana Rancic discussed the dress with appropriate civility, while Osbourne offered up her take:

“It’s kind of like if she was hosting the Latin Grammys — like what she would wear as her wow dress.”

I understand how it can be taken that way, but I think was more elitist than anything. As if she believes the Latin Grammys to be the cheap thrift shop of award shows. I guess that may still be construed as racist to some though.

  In how many categories do you hear Spanish singers on the Grammys? How many Spanish singing Rock bands were nominated this year in the Rock category, or Spanish singers in a country album, or nominated for album of the year? NO Ricky Martin, Shakira or J-lo singing in ENGLISH do not count.
  
  The Grammys are awards handed to many genres in ENGLISH, save for a foreign category or two. Spanish, like all other world music has genres in THEIR languages that need to be recognized too, you know.

  The Grammys encompass everyone…singing in English. Save for a category or two. Gospel..all English, Jazz..all English, Country..all English, Pop..all English and so on.
  
  There are very limited categories in which Latino/Latina..heck..Russian, Italian, Portuguese, French singing in their OWN language can win, yet there are SO many singers that sing in those languages in many categories, here and abroad. If the Grammys included singers from all around the world and fairly nominated a couple from each country we’d require a whole day to award properly and a shitload of translators.
  
  There are Latin and European MTV awards, World music awards and loads of many others that award the vast array of music done in languages OTHER than English. Has your ethnocentric mind grasped this? The Latin Grammys just happen to be Latin response to the Grammys as there are many singers and vast genres that the Grammys ignore because they are geared more towards English singers.
  
  When a Spanish singer/band win for best album, best new artist, best rock band and song, hip hop album, best pop album…where no song was sang or translated to English, you can write a complaint letter to the Latin Grammys.

Man, I am usually pretty thick-skinned about this stuff, and it’s not like I’m saying that it’s the MOST cruelly racist thing ever said about my race, but come on. It’s still offensive in the sense that she’s basically saying “hispanic/latin people are totally cool with this kind of ugly.”
