Today is a pretty racist day on the internet.
The Great Falls Tribune is reporting that Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull is deep in the shit right now, after admitting to sending a “racially charged e-mail” from his courthouse chambers. We don’t know about you, but when we see phrases like “racially charged,” we immediately default to skepticism but, no! Turns out, Cebull sent a shockingly racist e-mail mocking President Obama.
Here it is:
The subject line of the email, which Cebull sent from his official courthouse email address on Feb. 20 at 3:42 p.m., reads: “A MOM’S MEMORY.”
The forwarded text reads as follow:
“Normally I don’t send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching. I want all of my friends to feel what I felt when I read this. Hope it touches your heart like it did mine.
“A little boy said to his mother; ‘Mommy, how come I’m black and you’re white?’” the email joke reads. “His mother replied, ‘Don’t even go there Barack! From what I can remember about that party, you’re lucky you don’t bark!’”
Whoa. Cebull admitted the e-mail was racist (impressive!) but, predictably, insists he himself is not a racist. His proof of that? Why, the e-mail was meant to be private, that’s why. Let us parse that: racists are racist in public, while non-racists relegate their bigotry to private correspondance. Explains Cebull: “It was not intended by me in any way to become public. I apologize to anybody who is offended by it, and I can obviously understand why people would be offended.”
And just when you think he’s kind of taken maybe 50% responsibility, he blames… someone else. In this case, his brother, who “initially sent him the email, which he forwarded to six of his “old buddies” and acquaintances.” His old buddies who like racist jokes, that is.
But it keeps getting= better:
“The only reason I can explain it to you is I am not a fan of our president, but this goes beyond not being a fan. I didn’t send it as racist, although that’s what it is. I sent it out because it’s anti-Obama.”
This guy’s reasoning is so flawed it’s almost kind of exciting! Like a dumb roller coaster. To paraphrase, “I didn’t make the racist joke on account of the President’s race because I’m racist, I made it because I dislike other qualities about him, having nothing to do with race.”
Cebull was nominated by former President George W. Bush. He has served as chief judge for the District of Montana since 2008.
