January Jones Is Pretty Anti Masturbating In Public. Are You?

betty draper january jones

January Jones defends her character on Mad Men, Betty Draper (who slapped her daughter after hearing her daughter masturbated at a friend’s house), by telling The Daily:

“All of her actions are justified. Her husband’s cheating on her, and then she finds out that he’s not who he says he is. That probably warrants a divorce. And, you know, Sally shouldn’t be masturbating at other people’s houses or she’s going to get slapped.”

To be fair, there’s probably a case to be made for masturbating in your own house. Like, a really good case. Best possible case. Still, doesn’t slapping your 11 year old daughter as they’re on the cusp of developing their sexuality seem like it’s going to give them some trouble down the road? Or, you know, are there standards that should be adhered to? Keep in mind this is all happening during the 1960′s! If that makes a difference!

Sorry! This poll is now closed.

I’m not against masturbating..hah, why would I be? But I would have a different reaction to hear that my 11 year old daughter is masturbating in someone else’s house. Id wonder if someone’s parent, older sibling or other pervy relative talked her into it. I’d wonder if this was something she wanted to do or was forced into. I would not slap her but I would sure not be thrilled.

With you there – I’d also be wondering why it was a topic for conversation at all, and how anyone found out (I haven’t seen the ep so I’m generalising on the topic, not that scene).

I think at that age, because of the potential for abusive interest from others, it should be something a kid knows to keep private… at least, I did, meaning no-one took an unwelcome interest or anything, and I’m certainly not repressed as an adult.

Aah I voted “unreasonable”– sometimes you want to masturbate but, unfortunately, you’re not at home. What if she was really discreet about it?

However, I do think that “And, you know, Sally shouldn’t be masturbating at other people’s houses or she’s going to get slapped” is one of the best sentences ever. Pretty much anything that starts with “You know” and ends with “or she’s going to get slapped” is going to be great

Agreed. That is possibly one of the best ways to start and end a sentence. I will use it more often.
