It’s Joan Crawford’s Birthday; Let’s Decipher Her Thoughts Through Her Eyebrows

If I knew what was good for me, I would have never started plucking my eyebrows when I was in my teens. But at the time everyone around me was doing it and having quite a thick set above my peepers, I wanted to thin them the fuck out.

At first it was a tricky task that resulted in a bloody mess because if you give me anything with a sharp tip, I will somehow figure out a way to maim myself. But by the time I would have gotten the hang of it, I had moved on to waxing. These days I no longer have to wax; now it’s just an occasional pluck of a stray hair here or there, because I pretty much plucked them all away.

Although I’d never want the eyebrows that Joan Crawford was known for in her day, I would still like thicker ones. I really appreciate Crawford’s style, as well as the fact that, according to many sources, the woman was kind of a nut. Strength in numbers, I say!

Joan Crawford was born on this day in 1905, and since we’re all about celebrating women and fashion, let’s do just that for Ms. Crawford and her iconic eyebrows. I will steer clear of any “no wire hangers” jokes.

One MGM executive claimed ““No one gets more sex than Spencer Tracy…..except Joan Crawford.” I also once saw a documentary about the golden age of hollywood. A good portion of it seemed dedicated to these men – former studio executives, scriptwriters, bit actors – talking about how Joan Crawford basically just leapt in front of them naked and told them they were having sex. What I liked about this wasn’t that Joan Crawford did this, that seems not unexpected, it was that none of the men were like “I was so shocked!” or “that was not what I, a young man from Iowa, thought ladies did!” Every single one of them ended their story with something to the effect of “then I enthusiastically agreed!… and then I left my wife, which, looking back, was not the best decision.”

I also read today when I was looking for photos of her that the tension between she and Bette Davis stemmed from the fact that she put the moves on Bette and Bette wasn’t having it. So there was some awkward unrequited love there… which I think would have been amazing had they made it as a couple. It would be madness 24/7!

No, Bette was jealous of Joan because Bette carried a torch for Franchot Tone, whom Joan married. Bette had a very unsatisfying love life, from what has been written.
