Want To See What This Guy Looks Like After A Face Transplant?

This is, legitimately, incredible.

In 1997, Richard Lee Norris, seen here in his post-prom picture was injured in a gun accident.

In that accident he lost his nose, lips, and much of the movement around his mouth. He underwent extensive surgeries in an attempt to repair these areas. Here is what he looked like following the accident:

He recently went to the University of Maryland for a full facial transplant. Dr. Eduardo Rodriquez, who oversaw the surgery, claimed:

“We utilized innovative surgical practices and computerized techniques to precisely transplant the mid-face, maxilla and mandible including teeth, and a portion of the tongue. In addition, the transplant included all facial soft tissue from the scalp to the neck, including the underlying muscles to enable facial expression, and sensory and motor nerves to restore feeling and function. Our goal is to restore function as well as have aesthetically pleasing results.”

How pleasing were those results? Take a look. He’s still a bit stitched up, but we live in a pretty incredible age that this is possible at all:
