Some Helpful Definitions To All Those “Ladywords”

Surely you guys have noticed that sometimes lady writers preface regular words–like friend and blog and bits–with “lady,” which is pretty much a RED ALERT to male readers that they should stop paying attention immediately because lady stuff is being discussed. Buzzfeed’s new lady vertical, Shift, has parsed some of the more common ones for you.

Oh, and welcome to lady-blogging Buzzfeed Shift! The site with its somewhat confounding (like the dress? like a change in direction? do ladies enjoy shifting?) name is run by seasoned ladybloggers Amy Odell (formerly of The Cut) and Jezebel’s Anna North.
