Anne Hathaway has recently been ordered to lose 16 pounds for her role as Fantine in an upcoming production of Les Miserables.
A source on the film claims:
‘Anne is playing a destitute factory worker-come-lady of the night.
‘Unfortunately, she only has 15 to 20 days to lose as much weight as possible – up to a stone-and-a-half – because she’s been filming the scenes showing her fit and healthy, almost slightly chubby.
Now, to be fair, Anne Hathaway is playing a prostitute who dies on consumption. One of the main symptoms of consumption is tremendous weight loss and a loss of appetite. (I remember once reading something about a woman in the 19th century being pleased that her consumptive figure was allowing her to fit into the new fashions, and it was one of those great moments when you realize that people have been crazy forever – it’s not just the times we live in.) So. There is probably logic behind that, but it just seems like such a stretch of the imagination to say that someone who looks like Anne Hathaway really needs to drop 16 pounds. That said, if this were Christian Bale, we’d probably just say “oh, Christian Bale is in another movie? Neat.”
