National Cleavage Day: Does It Objectify Or Celebrate Women?

It’s news to me but apparently it’s National Cleavage Day. Or it’s almost National Cleavage Day? Or maybe it was yesterday? Basically, what I’m gathering from the Internets is National Cleavage Day, although it doesn’t have a definite assigned date, is celebrated in “either March or April” every year since it started 2002.

Sponsored by Wonderbra and Cosmopolitan, the “celebration” started in Johannesburg and as The Sun explains it’s a holiday (which Londoners observe tomorrow despite the fact they did a lingerie walk today) to “celebrate women’s independence and power in their careers and relationships.” Because whoever has the rack, has the power? Or is it whoever has the breasts, rules the world? I’m sure there’s a specific line somewhere that we don’t need to take from a Beyonce song.

Wonderbra’s brand manager, Samantha Paterson went even further to say that “it gives men a legitimate reason to stare at boobs.” I thought the fact that they don’t have them was reason enough, but perhaps I was wrong. It happens. [tagbox tag="boobs"]

Of course such an idea is bound to bring in other voices that say it’s just a way for a company to promote sales by using the old fashion fact that “sex sells.” While bra sales will result in donations to various causes — depending on where you live — it’s still a day that, in the words of the brand manager, gives men a “legitimate” reason to gawk at your luscious lady bits.

As a woman with a decent size rack, and one I can’t hide very well in summer dresses, I know that we don’t need a day for men to stare, cat call, or in one case at a bar, be motor-boated by a stranger. I appreciate the concept, and I understand that it’s meant to be amusing and celebratory, as well as raise funds for important causes, but I still can’t say I support this concept 100%. But maybe that’s because my tits are constantly being stared down as if they’re about to reveal the secrets of the world — and of course they will.

It should be noted that such influential and amazing role models like Kim Kardashian are celebrating it (because she doesn’t every other day?) So if you need that as motivation to get behind this day, there you go.

Sorry! This poll is now closed.

Motor-boated at a bar by a stranger?! I think you need to revisit that story. It sounds horrifying, but maybe a little funny too?

    • Amanda Chatel

You make a very valid point, Maggie. Maybe I should… it was a bit of both. If the guy hadn’t been so drunk, I would have punched him in the head.

I once got motorboated by a guy at college in full view of my boyfriend at the time. There wasn’t really anything I could do since he was (politically incorrectness here I come) “special”.

National Cleavage Day doesn’t make any sense to me. Guy stare at tits whenever they can, there doesn’t need to be a day for it. Is there a National Penis Day?

    • Amanda Chatel

We could make a random day in May a National Penis Day! Although unlike us, they’d probably love that shit.

It’s a celebration! Time to break out the old motorboat for summer!

It is a celebration! But yes, I would also enjoy cake.

Man, I just don’t see why it’s something that needs to be celebrated or even sexualized at all… In my opinion, women’s breasts are just another body part. The only difference, again in my opinion, between a woman’s chest and a man’s is some extra fat (sometimes) and the ability to feed their kids (if they so choose). Maybe if we want to celebrate breasts, have national public breastfeeding day? Or something? I also don’t see why it’s ok for men to be topless but it generally isn’t ok for a woman… alas.
