Before we go any further: this headline shouldn’t surprise anyone. The first Jessica Simpson-branded shoe we ever saw was an unsubtle knockoff of Christian Louboutin‘s beloved patent and cork Bruges platform. Fast forward a few years and Jessica Simpson has built an empire on making cheap, disposable versions of fancier things (a $1 billion empire, no less).
And now, the latest. Here’s Simpson’s Evangel sandal. Costs $98, also comes in leopard print and an impressively hideous blue/green combination. For our purposes, this is the fuscia and powder blue version:
The online store describes the sandal breathlessly, saying “The absolute show-stopping, have-to-have shoe of the season – the Evangela. We love the expert mix of criss-crossing suede straps trimmed with glossy patent leather, a chunky square suede buckle at the ankle, and contrasting hues throughout the body of the shoe.” If you do say so yourselves!
Despite the enormous discrepancy in price, the only identifiable difference is the trademark red sole (well, Louboutin’s color palette is also, admirably, a little more restrained). Frankly, we’re surprised that Simpson didn’t go the extra mile and just stamp a red sole on theirs, too.
We’d root for Louboutin in this round–and they’re awfully litigious when it comes to this kind of stuff. Unlike the Yves Saint Laurant case, though, this is completely balls-out in its thievery. Of course, Simpson will probably just pull the shoe, apologize (if at all) and then do it again next season. They’re still getting paid.
