Hunger Games Star Jennifer Lawrence: “Screw PETA!”

Jennifer Lawrence got her big break in moody meth drama Winter’s Bone, which features an intense squirrel-skinning scene. Rolling Stone asked the actress about the scene in her cover feature and 1) apparently it was real and 2) Lawrence has a few words for America’s nastiest rights organization:

“I should say it wasn’t real, for PETA. But screw PETA.”

Of course PETA has responded. President Ingrid Newkirk told Gothamist:

“She’s young and the plight of animals somehow hasn’t yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, ‘The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest. When people kill animals, it is the animals who are ‘screwed,’ not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature.”

Whatever. We just love that the talented Lawrence won’t be posing for publicity animal rights anytime soon.

I’m hardly the biggest PETA fan, but you know what? Screw Jennifer Lawrence.

      • Jenny

Thank you! I’m certainly no fan of PETA – but, shouldn’t we focus on the fact that the actually did skin a squirrel in the movie? I find that disturbing.

      • Confused

What’s wrong with skinning an already dead animal? It can’t feel any pain, and it’s necessary to get to the meat. Other posters have already commented that the squirrel they used was roadkill, so it’s not like they even went out of their way to kill a squirrel. What’s the problem here??

This just makes me love Jennifer Lawrence even more!! I love animals, I adopted my puppy from a shelter, but I hate Peta!! They’re ridiculous, hypocritical assholes. I love Jennifer Lawrence.

      • Edita

I have a shelter dog, too, and I’ve been vegan for 10 years… and I loath PETA! So glad for Jennifer, who’s way too beautiful and talented to ever pose naked for them anyway.

      • LCT

Agreed! Liking her more every day.

      • Sam

Yes, screw PETA. But, uh, what about the squirrel?

    • R

Jennifer Lawrence should screw Peeta …. See what I did there?

But yeah, she rocks and PETA needs to re-evaluate their entire organizational structure. They do some crazy things for hypocritical reasons.

    • Sam

Uh, I don’t give a damn about PETA. All I care about is the fact that she’s a horrendous human being for being okay with a living creature that can feel pain being skinned. Holy shit.

      • Cassie

…you do, of course, realise that the animal in question was already dead and therefore could not, in fact, feel any pain?….

      • Clyde

Uh…You do know that that squirrel she skinned was actually hit by a car, right? They gave her roadkill. It was already dead in the first place.

    • Lisa

      1. Does a squirrel have to be alive while you’re skinning it? Not at all!
      2. The Hunger Games features squirrel hunting and squirrel roasting. In a battle of Jennifer Lawrence vs. squirrels, Jennifer Lawrence wins.
      3. PETA isn’t always the most ethical organization, itself.

      • G

lol i know right?? Don’t people know how hunting/gutting works? It would be a hell of a lot harder to skin and gut a squirrel that wasn’t already dead. So silly lol.

    • Cassie

Kind of amazed by how some people don’t seem to get the concept of how their food is made. You don’t skin live animals, guys. Obviously?…gonna go out on a limb here and say that the people who are confused didn’t see the movie, ’cause it’s pretty clear that the squirrel was dead, and actually not even a particularly bloody scene. *smh*

    • DICKIE

What bullshit. People Eat Terminated Animals – as it should be.

    • Colleen

I have been a bowhunter since I was 12. I have been skinning animals since I was 10.
What, would you rather eat it with the fur on??

    • Lidi

Uh, PETA is so annoying. The way they ruin fashion shows and junk. “Let’s go objectify some women!”

    • Margaux

Can I just say I hate PETA? I find the skinning of animals okay but not amusing. So, I’m no “righteous vegan animal activist” but I can also call myself an animal lover. Screw PETA.

      • Trang

An animal lover, who find skinning animals okay. Make so much sense im gonna bump my head in a tree now.
