Best Maurice Sendak Quotes To Help You Through Maurice Sendak’s Death

where the wild things are maurice sendak

Children’s book author Maurice Sendak has died at 83, and this is so legitimately sad I cannot find anything witty to say, except that we hope that he’s where the wild things are. Though, I will say, this is perhaps my favorite quote of his, but all the following ones are close seconds:

Sendak is in search of what he calls a “yummy death”. “William Blake set the standard, jumping up from his death bed at the last minute to start singing. “A happy death,” says Sendak. “It can be done.” He lifts his eyebrows to two peaks. “If you’re William Blake and totally crazy.”

Ah, slide 3! “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That whole thing was so great.

I think that quote with ??? is from the interview on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, although if you listen to it you will cry…

Crap, just thinking about it and the fact that he’s now gone is making me cry…

I loved that interview he gave with Terry Gross, I was working retail at the time and listened to it all the way through twice.

I have no tattoos, but when I was about 19-20 I was planning on get a Max tattoo. Then the movie came out, all with Arcade Fire in the trailer and I was afraid people would think I was just jumping on the hipness bandwagon. Can I get one now? How old is too old for tattoos?

Yeah, I remember the book. Kind of like your ‘Beauty and the Beast’ cartoon flashback. :)

My favorite was this gem from his appearance on Colbert:

“Fuck them, is what I say. I hate those E-Books. They cannot be the future; they may well be, but I’ll be dead and won’t give a shit.”

I LOVED how caustic and candid he was towards the end of his life. :)
