The Savannah College of Art and Design is currently hosting an exhibit of Ralph Rucci‘s work and the designer gamely visited campus this weekend for a conversation with Andre Leon Talley and Robin Givhan. Fashionista was there and reports that the discussion touched on Beyonce‘s lateness for the Met Ball, which led to a broader discussion of the Met Ball red carpet, which led to Kim Kardashian, notably absent despite boyfriend Kanye West‘s attendance.
It was the mention of Kardashian that brought out some refreshingly frank thoughts from Rucci himself. Here’s what was said:
Andre Leon Talley: What’s shocking to me is how important the red carpet is. At one point I thought it was ruining [fashion] but I don’t think that anymore. I dont think any celebrity can take away from fashion. Not even Kim Kardashian could take away from fashion…Though, of course, Kim Kardashian didn’t come to the Metropolitan Met Ball but [her boyfriend] Kanye West did.
Ralph Rucci: And see that’s the thing: Many people who I think are the celebrities, other people don’t think are the celebrities [implying that he doesn't think Kim Kardashian is a celebrity.]
Robin Givhan:Â So would you ever dress Kim Kardashian?
Ralph Rucci: No, I think that’s bastardizing yourself [as a designer].
We appreciate that Rucci didn’t get too vicious about it, but we also appreciate that he said what he was thinking.
If you weren’t already pleased with Rucci, elsewhere he says, “I bow to Tilda Swinton.”
