Against Me!’s Transgender Singer Makes Stage Debut As Laura Jane Grace

May 9th was a pretty big day for LGBT rights and recognition. Not only did President Obama voice his support for same-sex couples, but Against Me!’s singer and guitarist Tom Gabel spoke out about being transgender. She was the first rock star to come forward with this very personal information and her move was inspiring to many within and outside of the LGBT community.

Two weeks ago, Gabel started hormone replacement therapy. And this weekend, Against Me! performed in San Diego with Laura Jane Grace making her stage debut. While talking with Rolling Stone about the experience, Grace admitted, ”I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something.” But in a black tank top and tight black jeans, the musician looked comfortable and gave a great performance.

I don’t think we really need to reiterate how awesome it is to see a relatively mainstream person in pop culture come out and embrace their sexuality. It’s an important example for young kids who might be feeling out of place or uncomfortable, to see someone they can relate to being accepted by society. And with her wife and young daughter along the tour, Grace is showing the world that modern families don’t all have to look alike.

Here’s some video of Against Me!’s performance, obviously shot by a fan in the audience, for you to enjoy this holiday weekend!

I was so touched to read in Rolling Stone that Laura was coming out as transgender. The article is beautiful and Laura is inspiring. Think of how many people she has helped by coming out. I get teary- eyed just writing this. Thank you Laura, from a straight 50-something!
