Should You Sleep Your Way To The Top?

This week, editors Jennifer Wright and Ashley Cardiff are kind of haunted by Sunday’s episode of Mad Men, in which Joan agrees to sleep with a disgusting prospective client in exchange for 5% of the company. After asking readers what their price would be, they’re turning the question on themselves. Sleeping with someone to get to the top: immoral or modern or more complicated than either?

I know for a fact that this was advice given to Ashley from a very early age. Did she take the advice, only time will tell.

Your whole conversation is pretty much the exact argument that went through my head when I read the title!
In theory, I’d do it! I made enough mistakes when I started University; if mutual love wasn’t important then, why not have sex for advancement? On the other hand, I just don’t think I could ever do it. Not sure why, but I just couldn’t. Well, not ever, if I became very poor and homeless and my life was at stake or something I would, but not now.
Also, it felt like my heart dropped to my stomach when Don told her not to go through with it after she had.

About ten years ago, my best friend gave me a book by Susan Jane Gilman that I read multiple times throughout my teens. Gilman wrote something to the effect of, “If women could sleep their way to the top, don’t you think we would be there by now?”

I disagree with her on a lot of points (and found the article she wrote for Ms. on Monica Lewinsky rather appalling), but I’ve always kind of had that in the back of my mind.

      Ooh, I like that quote.

In essence, it’s discriminatory against the women who choose not to – and obviously against men too, cause they can’t exercise the option as easily as a woman can. Litigation anyone.

In academia you can sleep your way to the upper middle. This is sad and frustrating for those of us trying to work our way to the upper middle –I mean, just go straight to the top and leave the middle for the rest of us, please.

There is nothing sad about sleeping your way to the top.

If you have it use it! There are too many people now trying to
get the jobs. You need to use anything. Good luck!
