Was Lane Pryce Anyone’s Favorite Character?

lane pryce dead

Essentially, every Monday I hijack TheGlos, a fashion and beauty website, to talk about Mad Men, because no one else I know watches it and I really want to share feelings.

First off, today, I want to say if Lane was your favorite character I’m very sorry for your loss.

We’ve never lost a character permanently before! If anything it’s become a staple of the show that characters might quit the firm but they still reappear at some point!

Not Lane. Not now.

My first reaction to Lane’s suicide was “oh, no! I love Lane! Lane was my favorite character!” Then I remembered that Lane had never been my favorite character. Not even a little bit. And I say that as someone who has sincerely experienced episodes where Betty and Pete Campbell, universally recognized to be the least likeable people on the show, were my favorites.

Honestly, when Lane beat up Pete Campbell I was, well, not exactly team Campbell, because he’d spen that entire episode trying to seduce a 16 year old, but team Ken Cosgrove. Team “away from this fray writing a short story.”

I get the feeling that while everyone sort of liked Lane, no one ever loved Lane. Or did you? Were you that person? Some viewer must have related to the way he was British and uncomfortable all the time and just wanted to date a Playboy Bunny.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: Was that the suicide that Matthew Weiner has been predicting since season 1? Is this the man who has fallen? Will all the characters stop staring longingly at windows now? Or is someone still going to jump out a window?

Whoops, shouldn’t have read the Gloss until I watched Mad Men today.

Sometimes I liked Lane, sometimes I hated him.

Ken Cosgrove seems to be genuinely nice, which is why I’m waiting for an episode to reveal he’s a child molester or abuses puppies, because I can’t remember seeing him cheat on his wife. A wife he seems to actually like.

Yeah, Cosgrove is the only happy person in the Madmen universe. He probably isn’t a serial killer or anything. Remember in season one, how he was so sleazy toward Peggy and other secretaries? He’s improved himself :)

I haven’t seen the episode yet, and I didn’t read your post, but by the “Was he” in your title, you’ve revealed to me that he died. I’m a little bit mad.

Or maybe got deported or whatever was supposed to happen when he didn’t come up with the money. Gone from the show anyway. Not too mad, though, because he is almost my least favorite character. Def the most boring. I hate Pete Campbell, but I love to hate him.

Oh no! Sorry to do the very thing I was railing against, Nancy!

        Hahaha! No problem!

(Excuse the yelling. This has happened every Monday I visit the Gloss. If you have any pity, spoilers in the headlines are EVIL. I just ran from Crushables “Someone on MadMen Committed Suicide” to here, where, well, it was VERY APPARENT who that someone was.)

      • Nancy

        Oh. He commited suicide. NUTS

    • Marissa

Yeah, I don’t know about Lane. I feel like he was just created to start SCDP, and then Weiner was starting to get bored with the Lane-ism pervy Brit comment here and there, and killed him off.

This episode was so great! When he had that look on his face in the parking garage, I knew he was doomed. I loved every episode he was in, and I can’t wait to see him again in “Lincoln” (he plays U. S. Grant).

However, Roger is my favorite. I was pretty worried about him earlier in the season, but I took comfort in the fact that his emotional range it too narrow to include despair.

It was so touching when he and Don went to meet with Dow, and Roger was so into seeing “the old Don,” but there IS no old Don! That poor, obnoxious, dapper, charming, naive, selfish son of a bitch…

To everyone who read my post on Crushable: sorry about the spoiler! I thought I was being sufficiently vague, but I had also just gotten back from two weeks of train travel and no sleep, so maybe I wasn’t thinking straight. Personally, I don’t think it takes too much away from the show to know what happens (I’m more interested in how it happens) but I know a lot of people disagree with me, so I’ll try to be more mindful of that in the future.

He was my favorite character… I feel so sad..
