As part of her continuing campaign to correct my conflation of the Gossip Girl kids with their characters (I want to believe), Leighton Meester said some very un-Waldorfian things to Lucky Magazine when being interviewed for their July cover story. As it turns out, Ms. Meester likes to shop at thrift stores, and sometimes she doesn’t even wear makeup! Who is this person, and what has she done with our Blair?
On the topic of maquillage, she says she’s stopped wearing it when not doing official work things, a statement I’m unable to call bullshit on as she seems to be wearing giant sunglasses in all of her truly candid paparazzi photos:
“I’ve stopped wearing makeup when I’m not working. For a while I thought I had dark circles and bad skin, and then I realized I was seeing myself that way because I didn’t recognize myself anymore without makeup. Now when I wear it, I think I look really weird!”
As we’ve previously discussed, beauty standards have a lot to do with how you’re used to seeing yourself, and if you’re able to reset those standards by not wearing makeup, you stop thinking you look shitty without it. Personally, I feel the same way as Leighton, only I’ll be honest and add “and really good” at the end of that sentence, because I like the way my face looks with various pigments painted on it. (Society!)
She also talks about how Gossip Girl has changed her personal style, apparently for the better, although I wouldn’t mind seeing what a homeless Blair Waldorf would look like:
“My friend says that before the show I dressed like a homeless person. I used to buy everything at garage sales. It was hard to give up! I’d be like, ‘But this crazy sweater is amazing, and it only cost 25 cents!’ I’ve learned from Blair, though. Now I like to pepper in something designer with my usual stuff.”
