Dolce & Gabbana are feeling “authentic,” a term you may not immediately associate with the brand (unlike “boobs” or “whiskered jeans”). For their Spring 2013 men’s Ready-To-Wear show, they traveled to an imaginary 1950s Sicily and presented a vast collection meant to realize the period. Per WWD:
Authenticity was the underlying message and the show focused — perhaps a tad too literally — on the kind of clothes one used to find in the good old days. Vacation-friendly sportswear dominated. Striped vests and T-shirts with a rustic hand-painted look recalled those worn by lifeguards of yore on the beaches of Cefalù or Mondello. Others were splashed with garish souvenir prints, paired with high-waist shorts with retro-bathing-suit details.
And inside all those voluminous retro proportions and horizontal striped pants, the Dolce boys cast real live Sicilians: 70 men and boys from around the island, not one of them a professional model. While much of the cast is clearly chiseled enough to moonlight on the catwalk, plenty more of them are strikingly normal, peculiar-looking and perhaps a little frightened. We must say, we kind of like seeing fantastical clothes on civilians, which removes much of the pageantry and adds a strange, welcome dose of (weird!) authenticity.
