For a while now, every fashion magazine under the sun has been vying for Kate Middleton to pose as its cover star but the Duchess keeps refusing (even Vogue, which fashionistas gasped over). In response, Marie Claire South Africa decided that drawing Kate Middleton onto their August issue would be an acceptable workaround and not at all creepy.
Editor Aspasia Karras told the Telegraph, “The cover is actually a hyper-real illustration of Kate, meant to be a fan art tribute to fashion’s new royal icon.” Inside the issue, five South African illustrators imagined Middleton in looks by five local designers (the cover features a dress by Clive Rundle).
It is indeed hyper-real but it definitely doesn’t cross the uncanny valley. Illustrated covers always creep us out.
