Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt Right About Pretty Women Not Being Funny?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt said, of his Looper co-star Emily Blunt, “She’s funny …  and let’s face it, most pretty girls aren’t funny.”

I mean, I’m inclined to say “that’s dumb.” Because of this:

But then, I’m also inclined to think that if anyone has an excess of attributes that will draw people to them, they don’t necessarily need to cultivate other attributes. If we view all of human interaction as just a long game dedicated to convincing someone to mate with us so we can pass on our genes, well, if you look like Heidi Klum you’re already going to be somewhat set in that regard. People already want to mate with you. Lots of people. Sure, you can be funny, but you don’t really need to be funny to draw people to you.

And humor is generally something you really have to work at – I don’t think, regardless of what very enthusiastic parents say – that anyone is a “born comedian.” Any night at a comedy club reminds you how hard it is to be truly funny. Going out on a limb, I’d say it’s an attribute that often ends up being cultivated by kids who are really looking for a way to make other kids like them (perhaps this is why Tina Fey so often references how dorky she was growing up).And those kids aren’t generally the kids who are “the best looking kid in class.”

Or, you know, Joseph Gordon-Levitt could just be an asshole. Weigh in and tell your favorite joke!

A priest, a nun, and a rabbi walk into a bar and the bartender says, “What is this, some kind of joke?”

    Rimshot!

Hmm. I’d be more likely to say, “Women who were taught from a young age that the most important thing about them was their prettiness usually aren’t good at much else.” Not always, of course. But it’s possible to be good looking and yet to have spent more of your time as a kid thinking about other things, and I think those women are as likely to be funny as any other.

I’m starting to think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an asshole. Remember when that really cute girl who had cancer asked him out for coffee via YouTube after 50/50 came out, and he totally ignored her? And now he’s saying crap like this… Yeah. Asshole.

    Nah, he’s just an asshole.

At least in the circles I run in, humor tends to be a coping mechanism. As often as not, beautiful women are hilarious, but usually they’ve had to use humor to cope with something that physical attractiveness doesn’t help them overcome. Other folks mileage may vary.

Also, Joseph Gordon Levitt is a jackass.

Stop! Stop right there! I don’t view all of human interaction this way, and I don’t really think you do, either.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in this weird trifecta of dudes, along with Penn Badgely and James Franco, of “dark-haired dudes who play cute guys on TV but for some reason I don’t really like them.” I have no real evidence for Penn Badgely! Maybe he is a very nice person. But this confirms some suspicions I had about Gordon-Levitt.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that he’s not an asshole, he’s just a person that has at some point said something he didn’t completely think through. In other words, he’s human.
And I think he’s kind of right, if by “pretty” he means “strikingly beautiful”, which I think it’s safe to say he does since he used the word to describe Emily Blunt. How often do we see supermodel/comedians? Yeah… not often. Same goes with guys, honestly, Jon Ham being a notable exception.
I would also be inclined to cut him a break on the cancer survivor date too, it’s his life, if he doesn’t want to do that kind of thing he shouldn’t be guilt-tripped into it.

Well, at least none of you are taking this quote at face value and reacting irrationally.

What about Eva Longoria? She’s stunning and hilarious. And let’s be real — JGL isn’t all that funny himself.
