In a move hearkening back to his glory days of putting supermodels in music videos, George Michael enlisted Kate Moss to strut around in the video for his latest single “White Light.” Unfortunately, as much as I enjoy zebras and wind machines, I’m a little disappointed by how it measures up to his past greatness.
While George Michael’s best known videos have been all about kitschy fun (like that one with all the cops and the urinals), this video takes itself seriously from the start, with artsy imagery flashing quickly by. There’s a hospital dispensing some serious drugs. And then there is a club, with a wind machine blowing Kate’s fabulous hair to and fro. And sweaty male bodies! And doves, and crows. And George Michael dancing alone on a hill. And the hospital again! And then back to the club. And childhood, and cars, and oh look, there’s a zebra. And shirtless dudes doing interpretive dance, in jail! Now George is finally getting shot by the cops, with whom he has long had a contentious relationship. It’s also happening because Kate flipped a coin. But he is full of light! Oh wait, IT WAS ALL A DREAM.
I’m not mad at this video for being ridiculous, I’m mad because it seems to think it is Art. Maybe George Michael’s been hanging around Lady Gaga too much. I will say, however, that Kate looks as flawless as always, and George Michael ain’t looking too bad, either. Maybe next time he’ll give a nod to his gay fans (and self) by casting a male model in the starring role.
