Kate Middleton Wore A $76,000 Cartier Necklace In Honor Of The Olympics (Maybe)

The lovely Kate Middleton*(Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, as you know) stopped by the National Portrait Gallery in London for an Olympic exhibition. Possessing the considerable attention to detail that she does, Middleton wore her best color (blue, here as a Stella McCartney frock) and jewelry that echoed the Olympic rings. Themes!

…The jewelry–Cartier‘s Trinity necklace–costs a whopping $76,000 (you can check it out online, if you like) and has some bloggers wondering: why so expensive? As Refinery29′s Connie Wang aptly notes, this is not to say the necklace should be flashier (or that it isn’t pretty!), but for that pricetag… shouldn’t it be a bit more interesting?

By which we mean, what exactly are you getting for the money? Our first instinct is “the name,” but according to Cartier it is, “the pure simplicity of three magically intertwined circles of pink, yellow and white gold.” So, there you have it. Pure simplicity for $76K.

“HOW DOES SHE GET HER HAIR TO DO THAT?!”

Simple: she blow drys it, puts it in hot rollers for about 20 minutes, takes them out, brushes her. She has pretty thick hair so the curls fall out and just look smooth.

And yes, its does take money… about $30 at Target.

Oh, all the rings are covered in diamonds. Between that and the name, there you go.

I remember embarrassing my mom once in NY by being flabbergasted that a Chanel necklace, simply fake gold and glass gems (very obviously so) was going for $750. Buying the luxury ‘brand’ is mostly what you’re paying for, rather than for the object itself.

Still, for $76k, I would expect something that looked “more”.

You’ve got to be kidding, right? Not too long ago, you all criticized her for wearing cheap earrings when she could have worn something better (e.g. more expensive). Who cares what it costs? Cheap earrings, expensive necklaces… as long as she likes them and they look nice on her, who gives a crap? There is no pleasing some people.

You are spot on! There is no pleasing some people. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Let’s hear it for the silly editors of the Gloss!

I’m honestly shocked that the Olympic squad didn’t maul her for wearing something unofficial featuring five rings.

Re “how does she get her hair to to do that?!?”

Random but I was in a doctor’s office yesterday and read a really old tab stating that the Duchess gets her hair blown out professionally in some salon every 3 days. So, yes, money.
