10-Month-Old Baby Girl With Down Syndrome Scores Landmark Swimwear Campaign

We tend not to pay too much attention to the Miami swimwear shows (we just don’t like fringe), but today we have a nice story from down that way: a 10-month-old Miami girl with Down syndrome named Valentina Guerrero will star in a campaign for DC Kids, an offshoot of Spanish swimwear brand Dolores Cortés. Although Valentina isn’t the breakthrough example, she’s really cute and represents a positive change in the way we sell things to people.

Cortes told AdWeek of her decision to cast Valentina, “People with Down syndrome are just as beautiful and deserve the same opportunities. I’m thrilled to have Valentina modeling for us.” She’s even pledged to donate 10 percent of profit from the line to the Down Syndrome Association of Miami.

Here are a few more photos of the campaign:

Well-done DC Swimsuits, well-done. And this little girl? Too precious and beautiful for words!!! What a great story!!!!

While Cortes may be up for Woman of the Year for this, one has to question the designer’s motives. By going out of her way to say that Valentina has down syndrome she has helped challenge our perceptions towards children like Valentina but at the same time one can’t help but wonder how this will help her sales. Inspiring or Extorting ?
