Black Bra Under A White Top: Love It Or Hate It?

Once upon a time we lived in a world where the last thing you wanted was anyone to see the color of your bra. I also think this was during a time when you could only choose from white and nude shades, and the idea of explosive colors like pink and green, or even black were faraway. I think we’re dating back to my grandmother’s era.

When I bought my first black bra, I never went back to white or nude ones again. To this day, almost all my bras are black with a pink or blue one here or there; but mostly I stick to black because I love it and it matches my soul. Of course, only having these colored bras to choose from, makes it difficult when I want to wear something white. I own probably two white pieces, but when the weather is like this I pull them out and debate how I’m going to wear them. Sex and the City‘s Carrie Bradshaw made the black bra under white acceptable for a hot minute, but now it seems rather passé. At one time you’d always see women rocking dark bras under light-colored tops and you never batted an eye. It was just the look, and although one that had older generations scowling, most of us gave it a whirl at least once or twice. But now you no longer see it and it makes this black bra-wearing gal pissy, so I intend to bring it back at least for today since I really want to wear a certain white top.

Sorry! This poll is now closed.

I think a colored bra, like blue or pink, under white looks better than black. Black looks like a mistake. But a bright color says “yes, I know you can see my bra through this top, and I wanted you to know that I have colorful sexy bras.”

totally agree. I buy brightly colored bras specifically for that purpose. Love it.

It’s a better alternative than white or “flesh tones” for those of us with darker skin.

There have been brightly colored bras for a long time. When I was in the sixth grade back in the 80′s there was a girl in my class who wore a neon fuchsia bra under her white uniform blouse just to rile up our Catholic school teachers.

My favorite and most flattering bra is a black, lacy shelf number, and I wear it under EVERYTHING. I think the secret to making a black bra under a white (or any other revealing color) top work is to make it look absolutely deliberate. The lace really works in my favor in this case, because there’s no way anybody could see the little bow peeking out and think, “Hm. She must have meant to conceal that!” Men know we wear ‘em, so why not show them off when they’re pretty?

That said, I think it looks sloppy when just the straps show. Double standard? Dunno. The obsessive-compulsive in me just doesn’t allow it.

I don’t hate it, but I’d rather see a pretty lacy camisole peeking out, it just looks more deliberate and put togather.
