The Racy In Literacy Contest: Send In Your Sexy Reading Photos, Win Books

So I spent the entire weekend in a bikini lying on a beach. That’s how I roll. It was unbelievably stressful for me. There were no projects to work on. I mean, other than that, it was pretty great. What I’ve taken away from it is a sunburn on one part of my stomach and this picture:

reading is sexy

I like it because in it I am 1) wearing a bikini and 2) reading. There aren’t enough pictures like that. But there should be. There’s nothing more attractive than people who can chat about books with you. Reading + Sexy = it’s not just for librarians anymore.

Incidentally, I’m reading Someone Like You which is one of Roald Dahl‘s books for grown-up sociopaths. Spoiler: in one story, a man becomes convinced that a stranger he meets on the train is the upper classman who abused him in boarding school. In another a woman beats her husband to death with a leg of lamb. It’s a bit like a more very-very-British version of  Chuck Palahniuk‘s Haunted. Did you read that? I bet you did. Because I bet you are sexy and also read.

And probably would not beat your husband to death with a leg of lamb.

Look. It’s up to us to put the racy back in literacy. Hence, the Racy In Literacy Contest.

To that end, send in a picture of you reading while sexy. Now, “sexy” is constituted of whatever that means to you. If it means riding a lawnmower in a Teletubby suit, well, I like that TheGloss accepts all kinds. I’d prefer not to feature nudity unless it ‘s really creatively done, in which case, okay, go for it. Reading is defined as “you should probably have a book in front of you in the picture. Or a kindle. Something.”

Send the pictures – along with your name, and a book recommendation to share – to Jennifer@thegloss.com, any time this week.

We’ll post all the entries next Monday and pick one winner, who will receive an assortment of books. We’ve got some favorites, but we’re also open to suggestions, so if you have any ones you want, send requests along with your entry.

Again: Jennifer@thegloss, one good book to share, and unparalleled sexiness. Let’s go. Your turn. I’ll leave you with this song:

The woman who beats her husband to death with the leg of lamb, is that the one that ends with her cooking it and talking the police investigators into sticking around to eat it?

If so, I loved that story…probably shouldn’t have been something I read when I was 11…

    • Jennifer Wright

Yes! I feel like it’s the best known story. But the creepiest one for me is the one about English boarding school since a horrifying twist doesn’t occur at the end, the twist is just “man, boarding school is a nightmare place.”

That’s how everyone discovers his adult work, though! You start with the real young stuff (Revolting Rhymes or Esio Trot!), move up to Matilda and Witches, maybe veer into Henry Sugar territory and then BAM! Sex and cannibalism.

I am a huge Roald Dahl fan and before we leave the subject, I want to tell everyone to read his autobiographies (Boy and Going Solo) if they haven’t.

    • Nancy

Oh my god, I didn’t realize he wrote that story! That story is what taught me about dramatic irony, it was great! That book’s on my ‘to read’ list now!

  • Annie

Where did you get that bikini? LOVE!

    • Jennifer Wright

Norma Kamali. (They cover you! While still being bikinis! They are that retro shape that looks good on everyone! All the exclamation points!)

  • Jamie Peck

It’s kind of endearing how much you love that dorky band from the 90s. I’ll admit they had some fun lyrics.

    • Jennifer Wright

You know, as I posted this, I genuinely thought “I’m showing how I’m pretty hip on bands. I know some pretty cutting edge stuff, huh.” Then I remembered you had a band column and everything was ruined.

Do they force you to like Cake at St. John’s?

  • MR

Hmm, I’ll tell you a scene similar to yours. Cape Cod in early September after the tourists clear out. Ocean’s as warm as can be for the season. Red is a very sexy color, but you know that right? :)

OMG,I bought CAKE’s Fashion Nugget album over 12 yrs ago when i was in college & it’s still one of my fave albums– A good album, like any good book, stands the test of time!!! Sigh, oh the memories…
