In Which Honey Boo Boo Teaches Us All About Tolerance

Honey Boo Boo, a.k.a. Alana Thompson, is already a cultural icon. But now, she’s becoming something of a spiritual guide for the country as well. The six-year-old beauty pageant queen whose TV show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” has been roundly mocked, adored, fretted over and questioned as exploiting poor, innocent rednecks has some words of wisdom for the rest of us. When it comes to being gay, she says, there is nothing wrong with it:

And there you have it. We now live in a world where we are learning about tolerance from a child. And any of us who questioned the goodness and the life lessons that Alana’s mom, June Shannon, was teaching her children can now eat their words.

As our very own Jamie Peck said over at our sister site, Crushable:

To feel bad for these people for not being more like me would be the height of condescension. They might not have gone to college, but they’re not stupid, and they’re both aware of, and happy with, who they are.

And apparently they are happy with who other people are as well, which is more than we can say for a lot of people in this country.

I don’t actually watch that show, but I came upon it while flipping channels, and honestly, I landed on the channel just as she said that.

I watched a bit more, and was repulsed as I expected to be, but I realized many people watch this show, and they’re being taught tolerance by those we would have otherwise thought were uneducated and ignorant.

      That’s pretty damn cool.

The idea this show exists still blows my mind, but that was adorable.
