The Gloss is generally quite big a fan of Michelle Obama and her fashion sense. The woman pulls off patterns, accessorizes well and is pleasant to listen to, so she’s overall a hit. I love that she’s extremely funny, promotes exercise through practice and presents as a real human being, whereas many politicians’ spouses seem stiff and posed (I’m lookin’ at you, Laura). But some people really, really do not like that whole “real person” thing, such as Virginia voter Bobbie Lussier.
In fact, when asked about her thoughts on the Obamas at an American Legion meeting in Indianapolis, she stated:
I just — I don’t like him. Can’t stand to look at him. I don’t like his wife. She’s far from the first lady. It’s about time we get a first lady in there that acts like a first lady, and looks like a first lady.
As one might have guessed, this was seen as questionable. Some wondered if her statement held racial motivation against the first lady. However, when questioned further last week, she clarified her frustrations (sort of) to Ari Shapiro of NPR:
Lussier:“No, she doesn’t. She doesn’t look or act. I mean, can you imagine you know, Kennedys or the Bushes or anybody doing pushups on the floor? I mean you know. That’s just not a first lady.”
Shapiro: “A lot of people wondered if there was a racial undertone to your comments.”
Lussier: “No, it’s not. I don’t care what color she is. It’s just she just doesn’t act and look like a first lady. I mean she’s more about showing her arms off. … I think that’s very inappropriate for a lot of functions that she goes to.”
Shapiro: “So do you mean it’s an issue of modesty?”
Lussier: “Yeah. It’s respect and … for being in the White House.”
Shapiro:“Fewer sleeveless dresses, fewer pushups…”
Lussier: “They talk about more like her dresses and how she looks and stuff and her arms and whatever. [...] You see her walking around in shorts, and you know, just real casual wear. And to me … I mean when I go to functions I kind of dress up other than today, but you just gotta look the part.”
I find it sort of funny that she was excused her own outfit for that day, but then again, she doesn’t sound like a person known for her rationality. Nevertheless, many NPR listeners as well as others who have heard about Lussier’s words against the first lady. After all, Michelle Obama is seen is a modern woman whose also a style icon. But for some reason, there’s still a strangely prevalent debate on whether or not it’s all right for her to wear her damn biceps out and publicly show America what push ups with Ellen Degeneres can do for you. [HuffPo]
So there you have it, folks: Michelle Obama really oughta to stop doing pushups and having a healthy figure that she opts to show off. We shall ban her to the land of permanent cardigans,
