OH GOD YOU PROBABLY HAVE TRYPOPHOBIA

tryophobia

Trypophobia is awful, it’s unspeakably awful. And you almost certainly have it.

I mean, at least you do if this picture made you recoil in horror. It made me recoil in horror so much that I can barely look at it. When I read about this on Buzzfeed I was so relieved to realize that I was not the only person who cringes a bit at the sight of aerated chocolate.

While it’s not a technical phobia, trypophobia refers to people with an irrational fear of holes, pods and circles closely grouped together. Popular Science did an interesting article where they noted:

“Evolutionarily speaking, almost all of the things that arouse a strong disgust-reaction–spiders, mice, blood, vomit–are things that could have been triggers for fear of illness.” Perhaps the same could be true for little holes, especially in natural objects where they seem particularly out of place. I suspect that we’re disgusted by pockmarked objects because they don’t look quite “right”; these perceived deformities signal danger, which we manifest as revulsion. But then again, a fear of asymmetry (another form of things looking not quite right) in some people with obsessive-compulsive disorder is not associated with disgust, Antony says. Perhaps holes, particularly in organic objects, subconsciously remind us of the symptoms of contagious illnesses that affect the skin, such as the rash or blisters associated with measles and chicken pox, respectively. All of this, of course, is speculation, and just goes to show how little we know about trypophobia.

If you want to test the degree to which you have it (don’t pretend the arm photo didn’t make you recoil) here is a video! I have to go to the bathroom and scratch myself all over, now!

      • Nicole Diaz Nelson

oh its a frog but still revolting and not ebcause of the holes, because there’s shit inside the holes

      • http://twitter.com/JenAshleyWright Jennifer Wright

It reminds me of that disease where worms crawl out of your skin which is AHHHH NEED TO HAVE NO MORE SKIN.

    • Renee

Okay, I have to go peel off all my skin now. WHY DID YOU POST THAT IMAGE?! WHY?!

    • http://twitter.com/margaretbarreca Margaret M. Barreca

Oh my god I can’t believe you guys wrote about this! I have always, always been absolutely disgusted and freaked out by lots of small things together – so like that picture, or those nasty pictures of bacteria all over something, or even honeycomb. I looked it up a few weeks ago and found a bunch of information on this and realized I’m actually not crazy. But now I can’t go on your site until that picture is DOWN because I almost just threw up. I feel this insane need to scratch her arms until it’s all off or out or whatever EWWWWW

      • clz

I know what you mean, I just grind my teeth and get chills, I don’t itch as much as feel out of control for a better word. eeewww

    • Ara

…you mean, I’m not the only one with this problem!? …and WHY WOULD YOU SHOW THAT PICTURE, -goes to hospital for scratching her skin off-

      • ara

when will that picture be taken down because I literally can not go onto the website (as it’s in the top row of articles and pictures) without having to go to the bathroom to throw up.

      • Ara

admittedly, I have a phobia of my own pores. …so there’s that.

    • larissa

i saw a picture of adult teeth hiding up in these catacombs in your jaw, they come down after you lose your baby teeth…i had nightmares.

      • http://twitter.com/randomanalysis Darby

Bisected child’s skull! Still one of the coolest pictures ever!

    • Holly

Oh my God. This was one of the worst things ever. I’ve always had a huge phobia of what I’ve always called clusters or embedded things. I’ve always tried to explain it to people or try to figure out what on earth it was. Not only does it completely freak me out to the point of tears and vomiting, but I can’t handle the overwhelming need to rid the holes of the junk that is in them. I had strep throat as an adult and oh god was it a horrible 3 days after I first saw the white things on my tonsils. My husband had to stop me from literally scraping them away with an x acto knife. Craziness.

      • Ara

having honestly gone to throw up after seeing that picture I completely understand.

      • melissa presley

COULDNT STOMACH PIC, BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT FOR YEARS AS WELL. ME TOO WITH THE STREP, TONSILS CUT OUT AND SENT HOME IN JAR, THANK GOD THOSE THINGS ARE NO LONGER IN MY BODY

    • Lo

I have trypophobia. I *know* I have trypophobia. And yet, I clicked this article…

    • Randi

      Omg!

    • Margaret

How could you do this to me?? I”m going to barf and try to scratch my skin off now. Thanks a lot.

    • koolchicken

Well I’m off to take a shower and try to stop the screaming in my head. I’m guessing the nightmares will be back after this.

    • Chani

Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!! That is just awful! I thought I was crazy as a kid when I saw rain drops form these weird shapes on the car windows. My phobia was triggered again when I saw a basil seed drink at a local asian food mart…..I yelped and ran the other way scratching everywhere on my body!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/amanda.mckennon.5 Amanda McKennon

hmmm….didn’t bother me one bit no scratching kinda really boring actually

    • Claire

Hours later, still haunting me. Not cool, Jennifer.

    • soozww

No problem. I’d also like to use a fork to pluck out the pods in some things and pop them in my mouth. Don’t get the revulsion, but I’m sure it bothers some people.

      • http://twitter.com/randomanalysis Darby

Same. I think other internet sites (cough CRACKED cough) have made me immune to seeing pictures such as these.

    • Sean

What’s aerated chocolate? Chocolate with bubbles in it, like the new Hershey or Nestle’s Aero?

    • Ali

Can you at least change the picture so on the home page it doesn’t show up – as I couldn’t sleep last night – and I’m still thinking about it. I go on The Gloss everyday and now I can’t due to that image…

      • Ara

        same!

    • windows

When i first saw the picture i thought it was a new trend of getting rhinestones all of your arms.

    • Amy

I absolutely do not have tryophobia at all, but that header picture did make me feel nauseus. Not because it’s “holes close together” but because it looks like she has a disgusting disgusting skin disease.

    • ladyteruki

The problem with the frog (or whatever that is) is not the holes… it’s that it hosts other living things ! The holes in themselves don’t trigger any particular reaction from me, but they are crawling in and out of its body, that’s where it’s horrible.
The last picture looks so fake that it also doesn’t do anything for me.

But the fingers around the 3″ mark ? What the… is that ? Is that a real thing ? What is it called, and how can I make sure I never catch it ?

      • http://twitter.com/Disco2000_ Deborah

Same, not because of holes but because something CAME OUT OF SOMETHING ELSE. Also, why larvae and caterpillars and things give me the creeps. It made my stomach clench. Not a good candidate for childbirth…

    • Sarah

I have Trypophobia but I made it to 00:36.43 seconds

      • melissa presley

I HAVE IT AS WELL AND WILL NOT NOT NOT PUSH PLAY

    • anthony

soooo….i didnt find it at all disgusting rather interesting

      • melissa presley

GOOD FOR U. I THINK THIS IS MORE DIRECTED AT THE 16%WHO DO.

    • saavy

I think it is OBNOXIOUS to take a lotus pod and insert/photoshop it onto a human. What type of sicko does that? What type of time does the “artist” have? The images created are very disturbing and people are going out of their way to disgust and freak people out. So sad that our society is so focused on this. I saw it only because my son came to me and showed me the girl with the lotus pods all in her skin and I had to research it myself to explain it to him. Now, after all the images and suggestions, I’m annoyed and irritated because it is so freakish and boorish all at the same time.

    • melissa presley

I HATE THAT GIRL!!!! THIS IS REAL AS REAAL GETS!!!
