I thought they were the perfect couple. THEY WERE MATILDA’S PARENTS! They made horrible parenting look fun. They each starred in tv shows that took place in bars: Cheers and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. They were hilarious and (strangely) lovable.
But now after 30 years together, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are separating. Who knew something more heartbreaking than the Amy Poehler and Will Arnett debacle could happen? I didn’t. But really, this is much worse.
Apparently, the two met way back in 1970, after Perlman saw him in a play on Broadway called The Shrinking Bride. Then they moved in together only two weeks later. And they made that work for 42 years. They married ten years after meeting, and have been together ever since. They proved that sometimes whimsical, romantic shit can actually work!
They really seemed perfect together. Perlman has said she thinks DeVito is “sexy.” She thinks Danny DeVito is sexy. (Ok, fine, who doesn’t think that?) They acted together in the show Taxi and the movie Matilda, and jointly founded a successful production company. They also have three grown kids together.
But now it’s over. Love is dead.
Here they are together at their finest:
Oh man, I need a drink.
