Scary Idiots At Paul Ryan’s Alma Mater Distribute Seemingly Serious ‘How To Get Away With Rape’ Flyer

Today, in rape culture! Some killjoy feminists have their panties all in a twist after some hilarious dude bro (or dudes bro) at Miami University of Ohio (Paul Ryan‘s alma mater) distributed a “funny” flyer called “Top Ten Ways To Get Away With Rape” in the bathrooms of a coed residence hall. As you can see, its author was just trying to be funny, with hilarious suggestions like “put drugs in the women’s drink, therefore she wont remember you,” “sex with an unconscious body does count, so don’t back down if shes sleeping” and “If your afraid the girl will identify you slit her throat.” ([Sic] everything.) How could anyone not get the obvious social satire here?

The university has called a mandatory meeting for its male students in response, where hopefully they will all be treated to a lesson in “women are people,” with an additional course in “See? Rape culture exists.” But is that going far enough?

“The university is brushing this issue … under the rug,” said junior Kate Van Fossen. “It could have been a joke, but the fact of the matter is that those thoughts are crossing someone’s mind. There are girls living in a hall where someone came up with that. It’s just disturbing.” Indeed.

There’s an argument to be made that rape jokes can be funny when made correctly, and I agree that they can be. But I’m not sure this list even meets the minimum requirements to count as “a joke,” even an offensive, unsuccessful one. Breezy tone aside, I’m not sure where the humor is supposed to be, since all of the “suggestions” are things that rapists actually do. Honestly, it looks more like something lifted directly from the darkest, most misogynistic corners of Reddit than even the shittiest of well-intentioned humor. If I were a woman at that university, I’d feel genuinely afraid for my safety.

Let’s hope the university does more to respond to it than call a single meeting. It’s a little depressing that almost-grown college students would need a class on why it’s a bad idea to make half the student body feel unsafe in their own residence halls, but maybe there’s hope for them yet.

Also, I feel like this is somehow Paul Ryan’s fault.

Fun fact: it’s also alma mater of alleged rapist and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

As much as I dislike Paul Ryan and enjoy poking fun at him, I don’t see what some idiot group of frat boys publishing a stupid flyer has to do with Ryan. This is what I dislike so much about partisan politics; Everything that shouldn’t be relevant becomes of the utmost importance. I might understand the comparison if Ryan was still a student there, although it still wouldn’t make much sense. Definitely not trying to defend him, but seriously?

And they say liberals can’t take a joke.

What is the motivation for character assassination, and what does it say about the person engaging in it?

Geez, this is just…really not funny. I mean I think rape jokes can be funny, but this is not. It’s just really pathetic. Even if it WAS funny, the grammar is just appalling.

I don’t think it’s funny. Any of it. Including adding that Paul Ryan went there. Why does that matter?

What does this have to do with Paul Ryan? Nothing.

There is no possible way, ever, that any rape joke could be in any way funny. This incident is appalling and the person(s) who wrote this should be forced to undergo sensitivity training and be made to volunteer at a rape crisis center. Then they’d see just how “funny” rape can be. And then expel their asses.
