Martha Stewart Paints The Soles Of Her Louboutins Black

Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood, Walter Steiger, Jimmy Choo… these are a handful of the foremost names in luxury shoes. They are beloved by lots of women for their style, for their height, for their craftsmanship and, probably most of all, for their status. Few offer more immediate status than Louboutin, thanks to that instantly recognizable red sole. The only more effective way to broadcast your social caste would be wearing a shirt that said, “I can spend $895 on fucking shoes.”

…But Martha Stewart doesn’t have to. She defaces her Louboutins by painting the soles black. Stewart spoke to InStyle at this week’s American Made Awardswhere she pointed out the black soles of her slingback sandals (above):

“See the soles? I paint them black. I don’t like them red, even though they’re his trademark. But he doesn’t mind. He said it’s okay if I do that — I asked him!”

She’s referring to Mr. Louboutin himself of course.

Martha’s apparently blogged about her unspeakable crime of fashion before, captioning a photo with, “Karena, my wardrobe mistress, painting the soles of my Louboutins black [...] this is easy if you use a broad sharpie.”

Listen closely… that’s the sound of 1000 social climbers weeping.

I have a few pairs of Louboutins. They are beautiful and exceptionally well-made shoes. I like the look of the red sole, but I find I don’t wear the shoes very often because I feel the red sole attracts too much attention. I don’t think I could paint them black though. It would feel wrong to me.

You know what, I think this is pretty cool. She’s proving that she actually likes the shoe for the quality of the craftsmanship rather than just the ostentatious branding. If I could afford Louboutins, I would probably feel uncomfortable wearing the red sole because it wouldn’t match most of my wardrobe and it would feel like I was obviously flashing logos around.

It’s not really fair to call those of us who love our Louboutins social climbers…I like that the red matches my lipstick, and I like the shape. When I bought my Loubs it was between them and a pair of Choos, and I chose the Loubs because the heels are so ridiculously tall, and at a sharper angle to the rest of the shoe, which is hot. It wasn’t because of the status symbol of the red sole. I almost didn’t buy them because the sole doesn’t match everything and I’m really anal about that.
