There’s been a lot of talk in the news lately about various asinine statements made by various asinine Republicans on the topic of rape, most recently the Romney-endorsed Senatorial candidate Richard Mourdock‘s assertion that rape pregnancies are a gift from God. Thankfully, we’ve got Tina Fey, Barack Obama, and some helpful chart-makers to set the record straight.
Speaking at the inaugural gala for the Center for Reproductive Rights last night, Tina Fey (above) referenced the dumbfounding comments made by Todd Akin about “legitimate rape,” “shutting the whole thing down,” etc. I think she echoes many people’s sentiments in saying that even talkingabout Akin’s twisted logic makes her feel dumber, but she was still kind enough to come up with an explanation for why Akin thinks “legitimate rape” victims can’t get pregnant: “Mr. Akin, I think you are confusing the phrase ‘legitimate rape’ with the phrase ‘competitive gymnastics.’”
Next, we have the President of the United States himself, who was on Jay Leno last night as part of his final burst of campaigning before the upcoming election.
When asked about all the ridiculous rape statements (rapements?) that have been made by his political opponents, he said this:
“I don’t know how these guys come up with these ideas. Let me make a very simple proposition: rape is rape. It is a crime. So these various distinctions about rape don’t make too much sense to me, don’t make any sense to me. The second thing this underscores though, is this is exactly why you don’t want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women’s healthcare decisions.”
FUCKING THANK YOU. I’m far from a fervid Obama supporter, but it continues to blow my mind that this race can be so very close when one candidate possesses a baseline of logic with regards to these issues, and the other one wants to rule the country based on Medieval superstition.
Finally, we have this Republican Party Rape Advisory Chart that handily catalogs the different types of rape that can happen to a person:
I hope this post has cleared some things up for you.
