We’ve been eagerly tracking the progress of Valeriya Lukyanova–the so-called Human Barbie–since she first landed online around April of this year (though she’s not the OG Human Barbie, not even close). It almost feels like we’ve grown up with her (or just grown accustomed to her)–we’ve even met a few of her equally unsettling friends!
Anyway, Lukyanova is causing a minor controversy by insisting that her looks are achieved through makeup–not Photoshop or plastic surgery. This has led many bloggers to call bullshit because they have functioning eyes. Here’s Lukyanova’s stance:
“Many people say bad things about people who want to perfect themselves. It’s hard work, but they dismiss it as something done by surgeons or computer artists. This is how they justify not wanting to strive for self-improvement. It’s how they explain their continued inaction. It’s just an excuse. There are plenty of video clips on the Internet showing what I really look like. Some people even spread rumors about me and retouch my pictures to hurt me. But I don’t take them seriously. I’m even flattered! It’s what success is like. I’m happy I seem unreal to them, it means I’m doing a good job.”
“It’s what success is like.”
She’s right, though, that it’s not too hard to see Lukyanova’s photos have been doctored when you place them beside screencaps from her videos:
Speaking of videos of Lukyanova, she filed this entry for the self-mythology hall of fame earlier this month. In the clip, she insists that her coquettish head-tilting is the result of neck problems (her head is too big for her neck, just like Barbie!) and not the result of… other things.
