Did Steven Tyler Make A Racist Comment About Nicki Minaj Or Is She Overreacting?

File this under “Celebrity Feuds We Did Not See Coming”: Nicki Minaj called out Aerosmith frontman and former American Idol judge Steven Tyler on Twitter for making what she considered a racist remark about her.

In an interview with MTV, Tyler voiced quite a few displeased opinions regarding the new judges of A.I.:

“You just have to give your opinion. It wasn’t hard for me, but I would imagine it’s hard for some people, and they need a manager to say ‘Shut the f— up, and just give them your opinion,’ ” Tyler said. “These kids, they just got out of a car from the Midwest somewhere and they’re in New York City, they’re scared to death; you’re not going to get the best [out of them]… If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield! Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out, as we did with Phillip Phillips. Just saying.”

Ms. Minaj did not take kindly to these comments, voicing her outrage via Twitter rant (which is apparently the only way to share your feelings anymore), saying:

“Steven Tyler said I would have sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield??? Steven, you haven’t seen me judge one single solitary contestant yet… I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven’t done anything to you. That’s a racist comment… You assume that I wouldn’t have liked Bob Dylan??? why? black? rapper? what? go fuck yourself and worry about yourself babe.”

While I wouldn’t have immediately classified Tyler’s comment as racist, per se, she does have a point: why would Tyler assume Minaj would not enjoy Bob Dylan? Dylan’s a pretty likable character in music history, so I can’t imagine why Tyler would even pick him, nor Minaj, for this comment.

Continuing her tweeted rant, she suggested that he wear a “No Coloreds Allowed” shirt. Minaj also speculated that Tyler’s reason for ridiculing her is because he was called a sell out and lambasted for taking up the A.I. judge role. As of yet, Tyler has not commented on Minaj’s comments and accusations, but if there’s anything the Internet has taught me, it’s that very few celebrities can shut their mouths in response to criticism.

Final note: Is it weird that the most perplexing part of this debacle to me is that American Idol still exists?

Ah, I think he was making more of a old vs. young argument & not black vs. white. Although I also can see how it could be construed as racist.

No, it was becuase even in the day of Bob Dylan, Dylan was not immediately liked and was not immediately thought of as a commerical artist. Perry’s point was that Dylan needed support and would probably have not survived the dismissive casting calls of AI.

It was more about “talent vs. no talent”

  • wtf??

dylan was someone whos talent wasnt immediately recognizable because of his singing style-he s an example of someone that would have had to bring the best out of to see what he had to offer

-in pulling the race card (im black btw) minaj shows herself to have NO KNOWLEGE of dylan whatsoever–yet shes trying to prove how worldy her music tastes are… i used to think this stuff was scripted but this is just….WOW.

The most confusing thing to me is why in the world Nicki Minaj is even on American Idol in the first place? I think Tyler’s comment was just saying that she wouldn’t recognize true talent potential if it wasn’t bam in your face right now pizzaz. And with that, I’d have to agree with him based on Minaj’s musical style and empty lyrics. (And I listen to her music lol but I recognize it for what it is)

Also, if she’s upset with the cornfield part, wasn’t that a reference to the Twilight Zone? I don’t know, Nicki is slowly slipping away from me… I find it harder and harder to respect her with each passing day.
