Dutch Man Builds Full-Scale Replica of Noah’s Ark

Far Side noah's ark comic

Though it took him twenty years to realize his bizarre ambitions, Johan Huibers of the Netherlands has built a full-scale replica of Noah’s ark.

In the early nineties, Huibers had a dream in which the Netherlands flooded. The next day he bought a book on Noah’s ark. After pouring over Genesis (books 6-9), Huibers then converted the ark’s cubits to modern measurements, set to work and made his dark vision a reality*. The vessel is 450 feet (300 cubits) in length, 70 feet (50 cubits) wide, 45 feet (30 cubits) high and fits two of every animal except unicorns, dinosaurs and gay penguins.

Because The Gloss loves eccentric millionaires, we’re especially charmed to find that Huibers is a wealthy businessman. Though he is a Christian (would this story be any weirder if he wasn’t?), he’s not expecting a Biblical flood anytime soon, assuring us:

“This has nothing to do with the end of the Mayan calendar.”

Great, he’s demonstrated himself as abundantly reasonable now. He’d actually prefer his construction project to be more like a floating symbol of religious sanctimony:

“I want to make people question that so that they go looking for answers.” He also hopes people will ultimately find salvation through God and eternal life.

The ark is located on the Merwede River in the Dutch town of Dordrecht. While people are considering their poor life choices and self-involved search for answers, they can enjoy the ark’s petting zoo, aviary, and many fake animal statues. They may also break bread in the ark’s restaurant and enjoy a movie in its theater (which seats fifty).

You can see pictures of this testament to human absurdity at CNN.

*Though we’re not entirely sure how he converted it. Per the Bible, cubits are “the length of a man’s arm from elbow to fingertips” and people eat way more protein nowadays.
