A rom-com can't truly function unless it has a friend who's in love with their friend who isn't interested. This conflict will lead to the "I don't want to be just friends" statement, to not only push the plot along, but make the audience fear for the friendship.

You'll find the necessary amount of silence, perhaps one that even includes a shrug or half smile, when the character in love is at a loss for words. Sometimes all you can do is shut the fuck up and hope that the person for whom you have affection is psychic.

At some point there has to be a declaration of a love that will never die. How else is the character who's being desired supposed to know? It's not like body language is obvious or anything.

Rom-coms are consistently peppered with the theme of someone needing to be saved, and even if they don't need it, someone wants to save them. It's a mess. The truth is we all need saving sometimes, and that's why this line is fairly paramount when it comes to romantic comedy success.
