I am trying to celebrate Valentine’s day by looking for stories about people being lovely and loveable, and my favorite one so far is about this homeless man (Billy Ray Harris) who is a really good person.
Long story short, in case you are on a website and yet hate reading: a woman dropped her extremely expensive engagement ring into his cup (she’d taken it off and put it into her change purse). The homeless man returned it.
According to KCTV5, when the woman went back to Harris to see if he had the ring:
“I was so incredibly upset because, more than just the value of the ring, it had sentimental value,” she said.
Her high emotions were justified because the item she had accidentally dumped into Harris’ cup along with her spare change was her engagement ring after all.
Harris didn’t know that, but he knew plenty well how sentiment matters more than money.
“She squatted down like you did like right there and says ‘Do you remember me?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know. I see a lot of faces.’ She says, ‘I might have gave you something very valuable.’ I said, ‘Was it a ring?’ And she says, ‘Yeah.’ And I said ‘Well, I have it,’” Harris said.
Meanwhile, I raced in front of someone this morning in the office kitchen to scrape a dime off the floor. But it’s mine, and I’m going to use it on a single piece of gum, like a millionaire!
Just a reminder that people are good, and do the right thing, and we are not monsters. We’re not going to be turned into pillars of salt this year, human race! Celebrate with marked down chocolates tomorrow.
