NYFW Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know For Fall 2013

NYFW

Marc Jacobs, Marchesa, Zac Posen.

Searching for some info on Fashion Week but not sure where to look? No need to fret: we’ve got your back with a whole lot of info from all your favorite sources. So far, The Gloss has brought you stories on body image within Fashion Week, as well as how fans feel outside of it. Plus, amusing videos about it, bad Valentine’s Day outfits from it and why we just plain love it. Now, here’s some more extensive coverage from all over the Interwebs.

One of the major trends at NYFW was softly strong shoulders, which contributed to the large rounded silhouette found at Proenza Schouler. Lots of oddly warm looks, as well, like Alexander Wang‘s collection, described by Refinery29 as what would happen “if Joan of Arc had knit herself a gray cashmere hood rather than a chain-link one, stolen the paws off bears to be worn as gloves, and then found suiting pieces to make her badass entrance in.” Vintage, right?

Russian winter-inspired wear was big, too, and could be seen at both Christian Siriano and Ralph Lauren, where the luxurious hats and glamorous dresses were “fit for a Czarina.” Christian Siriano’s collection held a quieter glamour, including gorgeous gold accents.

The entertainment factor was big at Anna Sui, with models getting down on the runway in a choreographed dance routine, including Lindsey Wixson who fortunately did not have a repeat of her 2011 Versace fall.

The dance also included fellow model Jessica Stam, Fei Fei Sun and Cara Delevigne (no cats were harmed in the dancing of this routine). It was fun, it was 60s French-inspired and the vibrant color combinations of red and pink were quirky and characteristic of the designer. Plus, that deep burgundy used is one of the colors of the season.

As somebody who admittedly is very new to the fashion world — seriously, I still wear jeggings — I’ve been rather in awe of all the amazing collections this Fashion Week. I’ve learned a considerable amount just by seeing photo after photo of the runways, the attendees, the designers, the models… And though I made fun of it earlier, I’ve found that I enjoy the craziness of some of these shows. In particular, The Blonds made me oh-so-excited with it’s intense MAC eyeshadow colors, wild nails (more on that in a bit!) and hairstyles which stylist Nick Irwin called “Marilyn Monroe on acid after having sex all night.” It’s ridiculous and fun, and while I love classic glamour, I’m also into the wild sexiness that is this:

Karlie Kloss closed the runway looking slicked with sweat at Oscar de la Renta –apparently Galliano told her to look like she’d been out all night dancing with Spanish men. Speaking of Kloss, her twin little sisters showed up, prompting Kloss to post this adorable shot of the trio!

Day 7 bore witness to the trend that still simply refuses to die. Michael Kors kept the clingiest shape in fashion going at his show, featuring — groan — plenty of peplums. Plus, the designer had 63 looks, thus requiring 8 models to be on the runway at any given time, leaving Styleite to feel happy they’d been at the show, but receiving “whiplash in the process” a bit less.

The last evening of Fashion Week saw Miley Cyrus wearing a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt paired with a skirt from the Marc Jacobs‘ Spring 2013 line in the front row of the designer’s show. The evening closed in a most NSFW way with Lily McMenamy – daughter of legendary model Kristen McMenamy — strutting down the runway in just hotpants and some fishnet gloves. It wasn’t the 18-year-old’s first big show, but it certainly will be the most talked-about.

As per usual, tons of excellent street style was seen all around Fashion Week. Everyday style around Lincoln Center can give you some great ideas on how to stay both warm and fashionable, with tons of bloggers and other attendees going bold on colors with the occasional neon nod. Plus, men’s accessories on the street stood out more than ever this year, reminding us that NYFW is not just for the ladies.

Beauty-wise, Fall 2013 looks like it’s going to see a lot of bizarre sexiness, with trends like delicately reinvented cornrows. At Rodarte, under eyeliner gave the models an intense bohemian look, but the real stunner was the wildly bright hair. Thakoon went with an angular short style on models which reflected the structured lines of the collection. Other runways included what Vogue called “sweater-weather hair,” described as being “lived-in, laid-back, and appealingly nubby—the most compelling hair… called to mind the fuzzy texture of a favorite cashmere knit” seen at Rag & Bone and Prabal Gurung.

If you’re more of a manicure lover, there were lots of subtly bold looks in single-hued shades — well, except for at The Blonds, where wildly long and horror-movie-printed nails were on display. Oh, and don’t forget to check out Marc Jacobs’ upcoming nail varnish line with Sephora!

And on a final adorable note: backstage at Calvin Klein yesterday, Karlie Kloss blew the world a kiss for Valentine’s Day because as The Cut said, “Valentine’s Day is not complete without an overload of kiss-blowing GIFs.” And neither is Fashion Week!

This is great! thank you. I wasn’t aware that my new hair strategy was so popular at NYFW. I feel like a trendsetter now.

    God I love Karlie Kloss.
