I thought you would like to see things to turn your stomach today, so, here is something! The hashtag #liberaltipstoavoidrape is trending on Twitter. The trend started as a response to a first-term Democrat, Joe Salazar’s statement to the Colorado House of Representatives that guns wouldn’t necessarily stop women from being assaulted. Specifically, he said that:
“We have callboxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have whistles. Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. Because you don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop around at somebody.”
This is obviously a difficult conversation for anyone to have, but, okay. The conservative blogger Sooper Mexican was upset by this (as many conservatives might be), and started the LiberalTipsToAvoid rape for gun enthusiasts to speak out. He claims that it was really just an attempt to promote discourse. He tweeted:
Which, okay, making jokes about rape in any form is pretty dicey, and that seems pretty dicey, but, fine. However, as you might expect, this hashtag has now spiraled into a dark, crazy, awful, victim blaming place. Here. This is the place it has spiraled to.
And incidentally, I have my own tip for avoiding rape. It is “do not rape people.” If someone does not want to have sex with you, do not do that. That is rape. Do not do that. That’s a great way to avoid it.
