I don’t really understand why the costume designers in the Hunger Games keep putting Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) in such bizarrely ugly outfits. Look at this new one:
Well, actually, okay, I do understand why they’re doing this. I lied. The costumes of anyone in the Capitol aren’t supposed to make you like them. You’re probably not supposed to be watching the movie [SPOILER] and mourning the downfall of a Capitol which ritualistically slaughters children for amusement. It was kind of the genius of French Aristocrats to dress so beautifully that, if you are someone who loves beautiful things, you sort of overlook the fact that all the peasants in France were starving when they revolted. Instead you just think that Marie Antoinette was aesthetically stunning, and what happened was sad. By “you” I mean Sofia Coppola.
So, the people making the Hunger Games probably do not want to do that. That makes sense, not wanting to do that. They probably need you not to be rooting for the glory of the capital.
So they have killed some tropical fish and stuck their ruffly little fins all over Effie Trinket’s feet. And put claws on her glove. So, she looks like a nightmare bird. Well, I guess that makes sense, considering.
