The Unfortunate Speculation Of What Breast Size Preference May Reveal About Men

love-big-breasts

Men seem to have a never ending obsession with breasts, and many of those men have preferences as to the size of the breasts with which they are most obsessed. Since all people are different and have varying taste with regard to the body types they find most attractive, I have always been under the assumption that breast size preference was just like digging redheads over blondes or something; it feels irrelevant. Behavioral science, however, says this may not be the case.

According to a study out of the University of Westminster published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, men who love big breasts seem to have more oppressive gender standards and ideals than ones who prefer medium-sized ones. Their experiment, which had 361 British white men from London between the ages of 18 to 68 look at female bodies and answer questions, yielded saddening results:

The researchers found that the largest percentage of participants (32.7 percent) rated medium-sized breasts as “most attractive,” followed by large (24.4 percent), very large (19.1 percent), small (15.5 percent) and very small (8.3 percent). However, a preference for large and very large breasts was significantly correlated with overt sexism, benevolent sexism, female objectification and hostile attitudes toward women. This connection was strongest when it came to benevolent sexism. In other words, men who tend to idealize “traditional” femininity and perceive women as meek and weak, are also the most likely to prefer big boobs.

As a woman, as well as somebody who has rather large boobs (sideidarity, remember?), this frustrates me. It is 2013, and I have a difficult time accepting the possibility that there are still men out there who view “traditional” femininity as “weak” — and are interested in that perceived weakness as an appealing factor in a potential partner’s personality.

However, it is important to maintain a certain level of skepticism with studies like this. For one thing, it was done on on a few hundred white men from one particular city in one country. If this were a nationwide or international study, or even included more than a few thousand men from several other cities, I would be much more convinced regarding these results. Obviously, men who love small breasts can be sexist and plenty of men who love big breasts are feminist as can be. I’d be interested in reading about a larger study done to see if the results are consistent. If they are, then I s’posewe have yet another stereotype and false notion to dispel.

I feel like this semi supports my totally unfounded and unproven theory that men who have a fixation with large breasts were taken off the teat as infants abruptly or too soon. And I have noticed this slight correlation in the men with in my small circle. Like the more they like large breasts are also more mysoginistic. Maybe it’s because of all that mumbo jumbo about large breast signaling fertility or what have you….

can’t we enjoy big breasts without being judged? i mean, GAWD!

  • Nancy

Thank you so much for pointing out the very small sample size and limited sample distribution of the study! I don’t even go on Blisstree anymore because they’re always making all these conclusions about bullshit studies. Now I’m an even bigger fan of yours, Samantha!

I feel like maybe it’s not the big boob preference, but the type of guy that has such strict preferences? And, on a survey, wants to be all “BIG boobs, hell yeah! Bigger the better!” That is my incomplete thought on this.

Kinda sounds right to me. My boyfriend loves small breasts and is totally pro-women’s choices/rights on about every subject. However, he is a leg guy overall. Breast size doesn’t matter to him if you’ve got a pair of nice & long, thin legs.

Actually, almost every guy I know doesnt really care about breasts. Everyone’s all about the ass these days. I honestly can’t remember the last time I heard a male friend or family member rave (or rant) about a woman’s breasts, which I’m okay with because I’m on the smaller side, anyway.

    • Jon

sorry to say but your BF is all about that thigh gap and unlesss you’re cara delevingne, you’re screwed

    • Amanda’s

I actually do have a thigh gap naturally & I’m at a healthy weight. He doesn’t really care about the gap, he just likes long legs. He’s into thinner builds, but he doesn’t like girls who are too skinny. To each their own.

I have an English boyfriend & my boobs are kind of ridiculous (seriously, I’m not trying to brag. it’s just ri.dic.u.lous. my kingdom for a c cup! anyway…) & I would consider my mister mister a progressive to very progressive young man when it comes to women’s issues (He hates the song “single ladies” b/c “if Beyonce was such an independent lady, why does she need to wait for him to put a ring on it? It’s the 21st century. She can propose. Cheerio, spot of tea then, lads.”)
So, while I do find this survey very interesting (interesting that such a crazy sexist study would still be performed) I just would like to speak for the gentlemen of the motherland. If you’re boobylicious & you go to London… you do not have to worry about being chained to a stove… or something..

This comment is great. I love it.

It’s too vague. Did the participants prefer big boobs on fat women to small boobs on thin women? Was each 3d model the same apart from the boobs, and if so, was she young, trim and pert? What about the distribution of tissue in each breast? I get the feeling size doesn’t matter half as much as youth or proportion. And there are plenty of sexists who prefer their females, shall we say, deliciously flat-chested.

It’s a silly way to measure sexism. Better to see what each participant’s ‘ideal’ body looks like, and find out how willing they are to deviate from that.

  • Cori

My husband is pretty progressive & he doesn’t seem to care about breast size either. Also a legs man like Amanda’s boyfriend. Although mine says he prefers strong, shaply legs.

  • Tania

Sweet, so as a smaller-bosomed lady, I guess I can hope to attract fewer misogynists.

Honestly, though, I attract ass men. My booty is rather sizable.

  • Chuck

Swap out breast for penis, and the results would lopesided.

“I have a difficult time accepting the possibility that there are still men out there who view “traditional” femininity as “weak” — and are interested in that perceived weakness as an appealing factor in a potential partner’s personality.”

But women are weak. Why is this so hard to understand? Women are the weaker sex. Women have been molded to depend on a man for a very long time. That just does not vanish because some silly little princess wants to be all independent.
