Vivienne Westwood Hates On Michelle Obama’s Fashion Sense… Hard

Vivienne Westwood on the runway March 2nd during Paris Fashion Week

In an interview this week with the New York Times, British fashion pioneer Vivienne Westwood gave her typically frank opinions on a number of subjects, including but not limited to America (our snobby fashion editors think they’re king of the island), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (she’s pissed they didn’t host a retrospective of her) and how fashion has “become so whatever.”

Though we’ve come to expect Dame Viv’s occasionally breathtaking candor, we were a little shocked to hear the criticism she aimed at First Lady Michelle Obama.

Eat your heart out, Karl Lagerfeld.

Eric Wilson: You must love our first lady, who is famous for recycling her clothes.

Vivienne Westwood: Don’t talk about her. It’s dreadful what she wears.

EW: What?

VW: I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her. Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That’s what fashion is there for. It’s there to help, not just to make you look more conservative.

Huh.

Remember when we put together that slideshow of everything Karl Lagerfeld hates? We need like two more of these profiles before we have enough material for a similar gallery: Things Vivienne Westwood Thinks Are “Rubbish.”

Hahaha, “What?” The best response, really.

I’ve never really liked Vivienne Westwood though. Her dresses worn by celebrities are almost always on the worst-dressed list. And look at the red rag she’s wearing in the photo.

I don’t much care for the first lady’s fashion-sense. Most of what she wears looks like it came straight from the dress rack at TJ-Maxx. She is not any more fashion-forward than any of the past first ladies if you ask me.
