Pregnant Lara Stone’s Head Is On A Platter (NSFW)

For i-D magazine’s Q&A issue that came out today, photographer Tyrone Lebon and fashion director Charlotte Stockdale shot five covers. Models Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Amura Cerkezovic, and Reuben Ramacher were all chosen and all looked gorgeous. However, it’s the cover and shoot involving Lara Stone that’s caught everybody’s eye, as she’s not only six months pregnant in the pictures, she also has her head on a platter. A fruit platter, specifically, which doesn’t really change the fact that her head’s on a plate of food. Despite loving the colors, I still find it…unnerving.

Of course, the photoshoot is in i-D, and Stone is no stranger to being odd and doing silly things for fashion; I think the biggest thing that took me aback was just how eerily unattached she looks upon first glance. The whole editorial is weird, though, so perhaps you should see for yourself.

I have to admit my excitement that a fashion magazine would use a very, very pregnant model and not focus on her pregnancy. Granted, they didn’t show her stomach really, either, but to me, it’s still better than snapping tons of pictures highlighting her “baby bump” (ugh), then speculating as to why she’s still in similar shape as prior to her pregnancy. Magazines and tabloids just plain love doing that and it’s incredibly annoying, so even if i-D‘s just kind of ignoring her stomach, it’s still preferable to the (only other) alternative. Plus, she looks amazing.

I’m just not sure what statement the “head on the platter” photo is trying to make. Is it supposed to be a subversive play on scocophilia, or is it just creepy/not that interesting? Other than that one, I like these pictures.
