The Internet is abuzz today with word that Christopher Abbott, AKA Charlie, AKA the very hot, most pleasant-seeming guy on Girls who was just getting re-down with Allison Williams‘ character Marnie, is leaving the show. Even bigger? Apparently, his exit is because of Lena Dunham.
According to Page Six, Abbott has had issues with Dunham:
“They’ve just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena,” a source said. “He didn’t like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map.”
I resent the notion that people somehow inherently owe others for their achievements and should continue doing things they hate as a result. If you attain a certain level of success, you should absolutely thank the people who helped get you there, but you should not feel obligated to work with them or feel indebted to them forever. Abbott is a solid actor with talent — if he doesn’t like working on Girls, he doesn’t really have to (unless he’s breaking contract, in which case he’d receive penalties for doing so).
Anyway, Abbott’s rep stated that he is indeed leaving the show, saying:
“[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire ‘Girls’ cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show.”
I am saddened by this, as I really do consider him to be one of the least obnoxious characters on the show. (Note: I like Girls, but the characters are damn annoying.) But I’m also stoked to see him in future projects. I mean, he just seems so adorably awkward; it’s hard not to root for the dude.
