Actress Sienna Miller attends the Costume Institute Gala for the "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2013 in New York City. Leather seemed like the obvious choice here but not a lot of people figured that.

We can’t decide if the studs completely overpower Sienna Miller or that she looks kind of great?

licia Keys attends the Costume Institute Gala for the "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2013 in New York City. Alicia Keys went for leather and some hair dye.

Doutzen Kroes attends the Costume Institute Gala for the "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2013 in New York City. Doutzen Kroes‘ dress looks like it was made of old tires, which is pretty punk, we guess.

Glob! It’s all so ugly! And for the love of glob. Stoppit Rooney Mara, Girl With a Dragon Tattoo is over already. It’s okay.

      • Cee

On the other hand Elle Fanning. Wow those dramatic-ish eyes! She sure takes more risks than Dakota. And Kylie looks lovely.

      • Elizabeth Licata

Seriously, what the math was going on over there?
Christina Ricci’s been doing a pretty good job at these things. I like that she always tries to dress to the theme. Back at the Superheroes exhibit, she was like the only one who made an effort at all. That theme was sort of like this one, where everyone got confused about how to interpret it and just gave up. Next year the Met should just go ahead and make the theme Prettiness.

      • Ashley Cardiff

Next year’s Met Gala theme: “Sparkly Neutral Columns paired with nude patent Louboutins and Long, Beachy Waves.”

Or, perhaps, simply, “Old Hollywood Glamour, but modern.”

      • Elizabeth Licata

This comment thread was from a year ago, but I feel compelled to come back and point out that actually happened.

    • jennifer

Is this being shown on TV ?

    • Samantha

I love The Gloss, I do. It’s one of my favorite culture/beauty/women’s websites, and I respect the online environment you’ve created, which is why I keep coming back. That said, you guys have some of the most negative, myopic fashion coverage, and not just tonight. It’s maddening. I expect more wit and humor and willingness to accept that fashion is goofy as hell so themes like “Punk” have to be taken with a grain of salt so let’s talk about the clothes and the costumes despite it all. You’re awesome, so cover fashion awesomely (which does not mean you have to gush).

      • Cee

In a sense, I agree? Yet. I feel that they do accept fashion as goofy, particularly Ashley. What I notice about Ashley is that she is that she likes something that is not the norm such as peplums, cut outs, lace, the color that everyone on. She wants to see someone play with other elements. From visiting the site often (too often), I think that Ashley likes…well not goofy, but different.

      • Ashley Cardiff

Some people like really conventional stuff, some people really like pretty, some people like trends. I don’t. But I do welcome you to state your case in the comments.

Also. If I didn’t have a sense of humor about fashion, I would probably just walk around punching walls all the time.

      • Samantha

It’s not a matter of what trends and styles you like. Fashion is all about debate and personal taste. It’s that there is no debate when I can generally sit down and know who is going to get praised and who will get negative comments before a red carpet has evened happened.

People have favorite celebrities, but the fun of fashion is that sometimes an outfit can make you rethink your opinion on someone for a moment.

      • AmbienceChaser

If you knew that Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus would be thumbs-ups at the Met Gala, I think you might have the first legitimate claim on the Randi Prize.

      • Ashley Cardiff

        lol–I’m still reeling.

      • Samantha

        Okay, you win, I guess.

Although, I disagree wholeheartedly on Miley Cyrus. The dress could have been a win, but she missed with the styling. But hey, that’s the fun of it.
But please explain why Jennifer Lawrence gets a pass for a dress that is not punk and makes her look oddly proportioned, especially when paired with those horrible shoes? Is a fascinator all it takes to woo you? Or is it just the fact that she’s the infallible Jennifer Lawrence? Also, why the hate-on for Nina Dobrev lately? It seems like an odd person to continually dislike since she’s such a non-entity. Anyway, her commitment to theme at the Met Gala was admirable, even if it didn’t completely work. She was a far cry from J-Woww – there were no cut-outs.

      • Samantha

Oops – replied to the wrong person.

    • Cee

      Kristen Stewart’s eyes… hollow

    • CMJ

Allison Williams looks like a Rorschach Test.

    • Cass

lol at Michelle Williams carrying around a copy Autopsy….so punx

and who the fuck keeps making Carey Mulligan look like a god damn corpse?? Girl needs a new make-up artist.

      • Cass

also, I really enjoyed nicole richie’s look tonight, disappointed to not see her mentioned here. her look was not PUNK by any means, but it was…festive…?

      • Ashley Cardiff

We’re adding stragglers this morning! Sorry. Every famous person in the world showed up last night and our photo databases don’t organize them flawlessly.

    • jacaline

Did anyone even TRY? BLACK CUT OUTS DOTH NOT EQUAL PUNK. There are like, four people IN TOTAL who even appear to have put any effort what so ever into the punk theme. The rest of these D listers ignored it and went the complete opposite. I am irrationally enraged.

    • Nymph1816

Whoever is standing behind Carolyn Murphey has a gorgeous dress… can anyone identify her?

      • Ashley Cardiff

Taylor Tomasi Hill! And you’re like the 10th person to ask that! I think I’ll add her to the Best Dressed list because I finally got a good look and the dress is beautiful.

      • Ashley Cardiff

Wait. Wait. It’s actually shredded in the front–and not the beautiful ODLR-looking ballgown with spiked straps we hoped it would be.

      • Nichole

Ugh! Brutal. It’s amazing from the back, but you’re right about the front. That was disappointing

    • Fabel

God, so much CREAM. Rita Ora’s was nice, but the rest make no sense.

Also, Leelee Sobieski, where you been?

      • Ashley Cardiff

EXACTLY. Her face almost fooled me into putting her on the Best Dressed list!!

    • Alexis H

I think Tina Knowles has been designing weirdly-themed, overly-matchy outfits for Beyonce again. C’mon, Bey, you don’t need to have your mom make your outfits anymore. You’ve earned it.

P.S. In spite of a few shining moments on other attendees, the “I’ve made a huge mistake” face on Kanye was arguably my favorite look of the night.

    • Sean

I feel like the guys had carte blanche (carte noire?) to run with the theme, but none of them did. I mean come on, you’re already wearing a *black* tux, why not have some fun with it? You’re guys…no one’s looking at you anyways…

      • Samantha Escobar

I feel like this is one of the few themes where the guys could have opted not to just wear tuxes or tuxes with colored jackets, and could have worn SO many amazing options. Instead, the biggest risk half of them took was to wear hair gel or a colored tie. Ugh.

    • Katelith

Brooklyn Decker looks like a Lite-Brite.

    • BL

I always completely disagree with your commentary, so decided to make my own this time… I hated my decision like a third of the way through. BUT here it goes:

Jennifer Morrison – Excellent effort, and she looks good, there was just very little difficulty with this one. Though her hair looks great and is a definite nod to the theme. In fact, her makeup is what really sells the otherwise, just OK dress.

Bee Shaffer – You didn’t even try. Super lame. This is SO modern princess-y, maybe the ugly pattern was supposed to be a nod to punk? I see you with those black nail varnish. Dark lip is good too.

Lauren Santo Domingo – Love the effort, love the mesh and the necklace… but this dress is so confused. Zero shape, weird sleeves, weird bunching around the boobs, and it doesn’t look like it would even move well. I’m not going to comment on the collar.

Rooney Mara – This could have been so great… the zippers are doing great work in good places, but it’s just too doily. Maybe the weird shoulder things would have worked without the sleeves? Or maybe the sleeves would have worked without the shoulder things. And the bottom edges of the dress, with the overall whimsy doilyness, is just too much… they should have been a bit harsher to offset the doilyness… the bottom half as is could be on it’s way to being a great wedding dress! Good makeup.

Nora Zeheter – Looks great, but there’s no nod to the theme at all. SUPER LAME. This sari print could have gone places too, if the cut/silohette had been played with. I guess the clutxh looks a little punkish.

Anna Wintour – The dress is beautiful and beautiful on her, but this is not a garden party. Make the white accents black and grey and get some mesh or tulle going on at the bottom and sleeve caps.

Anja Rubik – BEST so far. I just wish it had been a deep green, so it wouldn’t harken back to thriller at all. Even with thriller references, this is really working to the theme, the hair’s amazing, and makeup is OK.

Dylan Lauren – This is horrible on all accounts.

Amar’e Stoudmire – I’ll let the chucks slide, because it’s supposed to be punk… but he pretty much looks like he could be anywhere.

Alexis Stoudmire – This whole things just a miss, though I like that she tried. The dress, with all that weird feather-y ness, shouldn’t have been floor length and the makeup is just off. Mascara just isn’t working, and the lip should have been darker.

Nikolaj Coster Waldau – Love the blue of the suit, and if the black shoes and bowtie are supposed to be a nod to punk, them I will let them slide. Also, this suit just needs to be tailored better… Sloppy and Lacking effort.

Ivanka Trump – By no means my favorite, but good effort. The chunky jewelry is good, and this ensemble doesn’t make me hate color blocking. (And I repeat myself….) Darker lip. C’mon people… PUNK!

Sandra Lee – Weird. Hair looks so prom-y, and the accessories are off with regard to the theme… the dress doesn’t look terrible though! It looks funky enough to work if only it had been accessorized differently… the jacket’s not horrible with it, but doesn’t seem like it’s working for the theme. It just came to me! It looks like she’s getting ready to play at her recital!!! Anyway, the shoes are cool.

Emmy Rossum – Brighter or darker lip. Stop with the soft pinks and mauves, or otherwise glitter it up and take it over the top! (This is a comment for everyone.) I think her lips look beautiful on their own, but they’re totally at war with the theme, and since her dress isn’t doing any of that work for her… at least do the lip.

(NOTE – I don’t advocate that punk == dark lips… but with the outfits doing so little, changing up the lip on a lot of these looks would have gone a long way)

Hailee Steinfeld – I think the cut of the dress could have worked, but the shoes are off, and if the dress had been a little shorter with some tulle… I think it could have worked. I see there’s some coordination working with the clutch and the bracelets, but the bracelets just need to go.

Nina Dobrev – This is a miss. And a disaster. The dress is doing everything (like, stop it, do less.) and the makeup does nothing to save the look. Hair looks great though!

Chloe Sevigny – Punkest looking bitch I’ve seen her. Rock it. Love the bare makeup.

Katie Holmes – Heinous shoes. Makeups OK, but… you didn’t even try. You don’t even have snazzy nail varnish!!

La La Anthony – This is a mess.

Lauren Bush Lauren – Eh. You tried… a little. Nothing horrible is happening here, but I’m not that interested either. Cold have popped it with an orangy-red lip and some cool nail varnish. Those earrings are not it. Less dangly, more chunky.

Aubrey Plaza – I don’t like it, but she’s killing it. The dress is heinous, but she’s managed to save it with styling, and it seems on theme.

Belle Heathcote – Eyeliner is amazing, but the dress is a miss, and the shoes are heinous.

Carolyn Murhpy – Loving the makeup, and loving the effort, but the dress is a miss. It’s doing too much and the fit seems off. (Who ever that is in the background I love the spikes on the shoulder straps!!)

Greta Gerwig – This might look authentic, but it’s so not Met Gala. The dress is just a tad bit off, it’s not the sleeves, it’s not the length, it’s not the cutout… but something needs to be tweaked because it’s just so boring. That long necklace isn’t working. This look just didn’t come together.

Heidi Klum – Not right. It’s not horrible, but it doesn’t belong here.

Jaime King – Love it until we hit the pants… wish they had been tailored shorter. Overall, I’d call it a success.

Kata Mara – Weird, but I wish the lip and the shoes had been different… also I’d love to see a side angle of this dress before making a final judgment, but I’d say this is a mild success.

Kirsten Dunst – This doesn’t work and her boobs look really squashed. Beautiful green though. Eh, it’s an effort.

Solange Knowles – It’s wild and out there, which I can appreciate from an effort point of view, but this… isn’t working to the theme. Just seems off. The cut of the dress is cool. The pattern isn’t the worst, but I’m not sure it’s really working thematically, especially when styled with those earrings and shoes. The mascara isn’t working, and maybe the hair would have worked if everything else was styled differently.

Ashley Olsen – I’m so confused. Looks like a pumpkin. Also, this look can’t be saved, but the hair should have been up at least.

Coco Rocha – Ahhh!!! Almost perfect, I wish the dress had been a bit shorter. Not thigh short, but short enough so the boots really got to play. She’s rocking this look.

Dakota Fanning – Her face looks super washed out, the dress is missing detail that could have made it better (if those little wing appliques were tossed). This is a miss. Not a disaster, but a definite miss.

Whomever is wearing the piece from the Rodarte collection – Makeups way cool, but the dress isn’t working.

Emilia Clark – This is so boring.

Emma Roberts – Makeup and hair are amazing, but this dress is a flop. Nice try with the accessories though.

Giovanna Bataglia – This is weird, the fishnets nod to punk, and the weirdness is working well together. Do what you do lady.

Kerry Washington – This needs less. It could’ve been so good. The peplum doesn’t go with the mesh, and the tulle is the back isn’t working. Swap the peplum for a mesh cutout that trails down to an slightly pooffy a-line or tulip cut (in the same pattern) and we have a winner. The gloves are the right impulse, and I think would work well with the shorter re-imagined look, but as is, its just too much.

Miley Cyrus – The dress was enough, the hair is just overboard… Would have loved this dress shorter, like a bit longer than mid thigh, with some hot chunky badass leather boots. Rock that lip.

Minka Kelly – Makeup is amazing, but this dress needs saving. Seems a bit too tight, and that belt is the worst.

Taylor Swift – This isn’t horrible. The dress is cool, and a definite nod to the theme with the black and the mesh. Nail varnish is cool, though while already wearing black she could’ve gone for another color. The neck plate is weird, but… eh. Letting is slide, and the accessories need work (perhaps only some cool statement rings). Hair should be in a cool, off-center up-do. I’ll let the lip slide. This doesn’t exactly work, but it’s not a total miss.

Gwyneth Paltrow – This is a disaster.

Christina Ricci – Definitely on theme!! Not crazy about the dress, but it works… I wish the hair had been up. Hot shoes and tights, they are totally making this look. The lips are perfect for this look.

Jessica Alba – Cool hair and digging the makeup, though I wish the lip had more pop. Seems like there’s some cool earring things going on. This dress though, isn’t working. It doesn’t need the bottom cutout, and the slight flare at the bottom is working against the paneled seeming.

Anne Hathaway – The feather crap is too much. The dress is hot and everything else is working. Pale lip works just great here.

Kim Kardashian – Ahahaha, are her fingers also gloved by the dress? That’s AMAZING. This is one instance though where a dark lip was not the right move. The train isn’t working either, that’s just too, too much print. Cut it, have it very fitted and throw some awesome boots on.

Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn – UGH. No effort and the front of the dress looks awkward.

Olivia Wilde – This could have worked… needed other accessories and a different color nail varnish. Also, different makeup. I know I keep saying hairup… but seriously… I think the look would have benefited.

Sarah Jessica Parker – I don’t love it, but it’s working. I think the dress would’ve been better tea length (for this look) and while I think an overwhelming lip would have been too much, I do think hers are just a tad too pale. Seriously though, on it’s on, that dress is GORGEOUS. I don’t know what’s happening on top of her head, but she’s rocking it.

Cameron Diaz – Makeups off, but that blue looks lovely on her and the studded belt adds enough interest for it to work. A little boring, but eh. I’ll call it successful.

Jennifer Lopez – In terms of theme the hair isn’t so bad. Makeup is decent. This dress is such a miss though.

Jessica Biel – I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it, and it definitely seems thematic. A little weird and I wish I could see her waist. I’m reserving judgment until I see it from the side. Accessories are not winning.

Katy Perry – No. Definite flop.

Kristen Stewart – Awesome makeup, good hair, and beautiful color but the jumpsuit’s just off.

Maggie Gyllenhaal – I guess pointy boobs are thematic. That collar is way lame though. She should have spiked her hair, borrowed some gel from Miley. That’s it, her hair needs spiking, and then I don’t hate this. Still, I suppose its a success. Though a boring one.

Allison Williams – Disastrous. Coolish makeup, but the rest of the looks makes it hard to really judge.

Carey Mulligan – Boring, but a success. Needs more lips.

Emma Watson – Flop. Needs lip and nails, shoes are cool, lose the midriff cutout (or put some lace or mesh in it) and hem the dress just at the knees. The single earring is cool, but I wish it stood out more.

Jennifer Lawrence – Shoes are horrible. Moderate success with flawless makeup.

      Rita Ora – This works.

Beyonce – This is a disaster.

GInnifer Goodwin – I think I spy ugly shoes peeping out from beneath the sheer, but this hair and makeup is AMAZING. Dress is weird, but she’s working it.

Kelly Osbourne – I like where this was trying to go, but horrible execution.

      Michelle Williams – Boring.

      Renee Zellweger – Flop.

Dree Hemingway – Real commitment with those shoes, but this isn’t really working. The hair and makeup look good though!

Jessica Pare – The makeup and hair isn’t working at all. Lose the weird blue wrap around thing on the bottom. Just rock the weird pants.

Kylie Minogue – Eh. Neither a hit nor a miss. But not super boring either… whatever.

Madonna – Looks so punk, but also looks like she’s ready to go on stage.

      Michelle Dockery – Whatever.

Miranda Kerr – Miss. So boring.

Stacy Keibler – Anywhere else (besides as a hot alien/space dudette costume) and this dress is a no, but I think it works here… although one could argue it’s a bit more metal than punk. This is a success.

Brooklyn Decker – Miss. Though those shoes are fantastic and as are her rings.

Cara Delevinge – This is super punk. It’s not my favorite, but a definite success.

Chelsea Clinton – Capelet… ok, interesting. But this is so boring, and that dress is just a tad fugz.

Julianne Hough – Working it. Definite success! Makeup and hair are phenomenal, and the black tulle peaking out makes this.

Kate Beckinsale – Meh. Definitely not crazy about the accessories.

Karen Elson – Don’t know how on theme this is, but she looks amazing nonetheless.

Kate Upton – Miss. Oh god. The dress is so bad. Hair and makeup are ok.

Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak – No effort

Sofia Coppala – Nope. Not having it.

Marc Jacops – You could’ve worn other pants, but I’m loving what’s happening up top.

Tom Brady – Meh. It’s hard for guys to go horribly wrong, but although the blue is pretty, this is pretty boring. Unlike Jacobs, he should’ve gone matching top and bottoms. And tailored the pants a bit short.

      Elizabeth Hurly – Boring sexy.

Alexa Chung – It’s interesting, but the pleating around the collar and shoulders/chest is weird. Eh. Not horrible and not boring. Could’ve used more lip.

Gwen Stefani – The bottom of the dress is super weird fitting, but I’m loving the top on her. Gwen knows how to do a lip and that hair is working.

Leelee Sobieski – That dress would definitely work better at a shorter length. Maybe knees or tea length. Rock that lip and those sleeves are phenomenal.

Marion Cotillard – Not loving the lip, and not crazy about the dress, but this is working. This is thematic. The shoes sell it.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – Great effort, but this is a flop.

      Ziyi Zhang – Pretty. Boring.

Elizabeth Banks – This works y’all! though I don’t think the jacket/dress NEEDED to be totally sequined… and in gold at that.

Florence Welch – Where are you lips? Whatever. Looks like it’d be fun to walk around in.

January Jones – Rocking it. This is amazing.

Lily Aldrige – Pulls this color off better than Ms. Olsen, nice lips and blah, but OK, hair… the dress itself is pretty boring.

Caleb Followill – Whatever. Cool shoes happening.

Mary Kate Olsen – the hair looks way cool, and the makeups whatever, but everything else is a giant flop.

Tommy Hilfiger – Looking good! A bit obvious, but it works.

Dee F’ing Hilfiger – Cool hair and makeup, but the dress and shoes aren’t working. It’s too obvious and it’s too much.

      Ashley Greene – Miss.

Blake Lively – The top of the dress is quite boring and needed some accessories (a choker?) or some hair to save it. Needs more lip. Not bad overall though. Just kinda eh.

      Donatella – Looks punk.

Jessica Hart – Same category as Miss Kerr.

Nicki Minaj – Moderate success. The accessories are off though. Dress is weird, but its ok. Color combinations are really working here.

Paloma Faith – Too much.Take off the weird hair thing and we have a moderate sucess (that’s still a bit over the top, but it’s ok).

Uma Thurman – Eh. She’s working it.

Amber Heard – This dress is a miss.

Sienna Miller – This just isn’t working… good instinct, but that dress wasn’t the right choice. The hair is definitely cool. Who is next to her?? He wins.

Alcia Keys – This is a miss.

Dourtzen Kroes – This is heinous.

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt – Whatever John, props for getting dressed. Cool hair and makeup on miss blunt, but that dress is super boring.

Lena Dunham – Her makeup is really flattering! Needs a bit more lip. Not crazy about the dress…

      Erdem Moralioglu – Whatever.

Karolina Kurkova – Makeup and hair are a success, the dress is weird, but I really need to see the shoes to make an overall assessment.

Kate Bosworth – Not really digging it, that dress seems a bit heinous, but whatever. Neither here nor there…

Nicole Richie – Love the hair, makeup, and supertan, but that dress is not it at all. Cool earrings going on.

      Tom Ford – whatever.

Joan Smalls – This is a flop. The hairs is not good, and that dress isn’t working.

Chanel Iman – Not my favorite, but this works. The pink in the hair is obvious, as is the print a bit, bit it’s interesting and cohesive enough to work.

Constance Jablonski – Go find Beyonce.

Eve – Cut the bottom of the dress off and extended the weird leather chevron jazz. Up your lip game and rock some killer shoes (which I don’t think you are..) and we’ve met the theme and it works. Wouldn’t be my favorite look, but do you boo.

      Hilary Roda – This works.

Felicity Jones – Meh. Cute hair, but needs lip. The dress works, but it’s pretty boring.

Jamioe Campbell Bower – Those shoes are a miss, but you’re working everything else. (Also, just saw Ms. Ricci’s dress from the back, and I’m less a fan).

      Lily Collins – FLOP.

      Joely Richardson – flop.

Kim Gordan – miss… that dress is not her dress. I’m not sure whose dress it is.

Marky Ramone – doing it. Hating himself for it.

Tabitha Simmons – Better crown than Miss Perry’s, but nope.

Karlie Kloss – Weird. This is a miss.

Her boobs look weird, she looks vaguely pregnant (I don’t think she is) and there’s a little too much highlighting going on with the makeup. Cute lip!

      • Ashley Cardiff

I wish every comment was like this.

      • Zan Brody

That was actually rather amazing. I went the opposite. I was so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people, I have no comments this round.

    • Erin Marie Hall

Except all of these are clearly cherry-picked examples of not following the theme, completely ignoring the dozens of looks that worked really, really well. “Myopic” is definitely the word to describe this website’s fashion coverage.

    • Tania

I would do many dirty things to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, but that picture makes his nose look like a penis and it’s upsetting me.

    • sherry_b

ok ok ok, totally completely not on theme and all the rest of it but am i the only one who thinks kate beckinsale’s dress is ART?

    • Linda Leather

Sienna Miller looks amazing in all the studs and spiked leather.
