Seven Reasons Women Love Game Of Thrones

game-of-thrones

There is a horrendously trollsome article up on internet man cave Thrillist right now detailing all the reasons why girls hate HBO’s award winning fantasy program Game Of Thrones. According to the ostensibly female writer, women hate Game Of Thrones because it’s got incest on it, it’s too complicated for our lady brains to follow, it is nerdy, it is full of naked women, and you have to watch men get their extremities cut off. Oh dear.

However, in actuality, almost every woman I know who is able to obtain HBO shows really loves it, from my roommates to my colleagues at The Gloss to my mom. Here are some reasons why.

1. Game Of Thrones has many strong female characters.

From the gender-bending lady knight Brienne of Tarth, to the rambunctious tomboy Arya Stark, to the slave-freeing mother of dragons Daenerys Targaryen, to, yes, the manipulative queen regent Cersei Lannister, Game Of Thrones has more strong female characters than any other show I can think of. Cersei actually has the balls to tell her father she’d be treated differently if she were a man. Ygritte reminds Jon Snow that “girls see more blood than boys” when he mentions that some women swoon at the sight of blood. And Robb Stark‘s wife Talisa is not just a sexy lady, but a fucking doctor to boot. The Red Woman terrifies me, but no one can say she’s not powerful. She has FIRE GOD POWER, which sometimes comes out of her vagina in the form of a smoke monster. Badass women are so prevalent in Westeros that it’s actually jarring when someone does hew to traditional gender roles, like Sansa Stark.

2. People talk a lot about their ideas and feelings.

I know they try to distract us from this fact by having naked ladies do sex things while the monologues are going on, but at the end of the day, this show contains a lot of talk. Talk about power, talk about lost love, and talk about people’s sad secret backstories. As resident GoT expert Jennifer says, “If there was a show called ‘People talking about power and lost love’ that’s all I’d watch. And I think that is GoT’s subtitle.”

3. One of Game Of Thrones‘ major themes is love.

And speaking of lost love…much of Game Of Thrones is devoted to showing the damage it does to people’s hearts to live in a turbulent feudal aristocracy where marriages are arranged purely for tactical reasons. On this show, love conquers Tyrion Lannister’s sex addiction, Robb Stark’s need for an army, and death itself (well, almost). If that’s not romantic, I don’t know what is.

4. Another major theme? Female pleasure.

Sure, it’s unrealistic that all those male virgins are so good at sex. But it still sends the message that men should want to be good at sex. That they should care about pleasing their women and not just rut on them like a bunch of wildling savages. That they should go down on their ladies for as long as the ladies like! Even though nobody showers in Game of Thrones world! If that’s not commitment to the female orgasm, I don’t know what is.

5. It is full of naked men.

Has this person seen even one episode of Game Of Thrones? It is chock full of naked man butt! Jon Snow, Jamie Lannister, Robb Stark, Khal Drogo, and Sir Loras and the dudes he bangs are all prime examples of the top choice man meat this show regularly presents to the female gaze. Or is she one of those deluded people who thinks most women don’t like to look at the butts of attractive naked men?

6. Guys get their extremities chopped off.

And this is a bad thing how? Feminists love watching guys get their dicks docked. J/k no but srsly, nobody likes watching these parts.

7. FUCK YEAH, DRAGONS

Show me a person who hates dragons and I’ll show you a person who needs to get over not getting invited to the cool parties in high school. Dinosaurs are awesome. Fire is awesome. Dinosaurs plus fire? Hell to the fuck yeah. And they were hatched, from eggs, by a woman. Boom.

I’m not particularly crazy about Game of Thrones – I watched the first season have a basic idea of what’s going on these days because that is the only way to communicate with my teenaged sister – but I don’t think it’s for feminine reasons. I think it’s mostly because I have to depend on my sister to explain book-backstory. And yeah, okay, I hate seeing people butchered, but seriously, if you enjoy watching someone get his head chopped off I don’t want to be friends with you, whether you are a man or a woman.

I actually hate this show for a most of the reasons the trollish article listed, so maybe even a broken clock is right twice a day?

I mainly watch for Brienne of Tarth (okay and Margaery). That woman can wear armor…

    • jamiepeck

Brienne is the best! Her unlikely friendship with Jamie Lannister is just the cutest.

Clearly, a lot of you love GoT too if you are so vigilant about how to spell things! I fixed it. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. We’re all GoT fans here.

All man parts have been chopped off-screen. So it’s not even as if it’s a thing; nobody’s watching balls-go-bye-bye because off-screen and not a thing. So there’s that. Whew! Got that all out before my ladybrain made me start thinking about clipping recipes again. :-)

  • Lo

Hey hey hey, you forgot Olenna Tyrell. She’s more obviously sharp-witted in the series, but she’s awesome either way, to man and woman.

While we’re on the female characters, I’m going to put in a good word for Mirri Maz Duur (the maegi Daenerys burned alive in s1). In the book, she tried to heal Drogo but he wouldn’t pay attention to her ‘don’t take the burny poultice off, O Fearless One’ instructions. In the series, they set it up more like she killed him and Rhaego on purpose, but then it looks like she quietly made sure that that big-ass unified khalasar wouldn’t be doing quite so much pillaging. And she was smart enough to know she’d die for it.

I read the other article first so I can relate to you better, and I left that site incredibly miffed. Thank you for the laugh! I LOVE the last one.

  • Amy

I agree with everything, especially number 1. I love that the show has so many strong female characters. Quite often their storylines are more interesting than the male characters and they’re often shown as being more strategic because their position requires them to be. Love it.

#6. Technically we don’t actually SEE anything being chopped off…..it’s just heavily implied.

  • qwertyuiop

I think Sansa Stark should also be considered a strong female, although she is closer to the traditional female in that time, she also stays strong throughout all the beatings she gets, she begins to learn how to play the game of thrones and survive in a place full of lions that want to hurt her and she even tried to push Joffrey off a bridge regardless of her safety. Although many think she is a whining little girl, technically she was brought up to believe that some prince would come to rescue her or whatnot. She’s actually quite strong to be able to continue surviving even though all her beliefs had been uprooted and there is pretty much no one their who want to help her, she literally has zero friends.

    • hannah

yeah, plus she’s more realistic, it’s not like you have to be tomboy like Arya to survive, you can be a strong, court lady who guards her words and learns to manipulate others to survive but also to save others like Dontos.

I know this article is super old now but I just came across it again and thought it was worth mentioning that also, some women, like seeing hot girls get naked…did no one ever think of that?
