Another Adorable Couple Has Been Wearing Matching Outfits For 35 Years

Some things that start out a bit weird can grow to be downright adorable if you just never, ever give them up. Case in point: An amazing couple that has been dressing in matching outfits for 35 years.

If you dress like your date once, whether it’s quirky or lame depends a lot on context. (Hi, Britney and Justin in 2001.) But if you’ve been wearing matching outfits for 35 years and still want to do that every day? Awww …

Nancy Featherstone told The Guardian that she started by making shirts for her husband, and blouses for herself from the leftover fabric.

“It was fun going out in coordinating shirts,” she said. “We got lots of compliments and people who would normally just walk on by stopped to talk to us. We enjoyed the attention and we also enjoyed how we looked.”

Her husband, Donald, liked wearing the matching shirts so much that he said they should take it a step further and match all over.

“Donald used to have to travel for business and when I packed his case, I’d tell him which outfit to wear on which day, so we coordinated even though we were apart,” Nancy said. “It helped us feel connected to each other.”

This is seriously starting to sound like the cutest thing ever. And lest it seem like things are getting a little too kitschy at the Featherstone house, Donald is actually the honest-to-god guy who invented pink plastic lawn flamingos. He picks out a lot of the fabrics, with an eye towards color and bold designs, and Nancy makes the matching-fabric outfits. She’s made more than 600 things so far. Donald gets shirts and trousers and jackets, but Nancy likes to wear ruffles and bows and stereotypically girly things, so she often designs ruffled dresses for herself.

Thirty-five years on, the matching outfits couple has four wardrobes of twin outfits hanging in pairs. There’s even a special wardrobe for outfits made with flamingo fabric, of which they currently have 40.

Nancy says that whoever winds up at the wardrobe first in the morning generally picks out which set of matching outfits they’ll be wearing for the day, but they caucus to plan their outfits for events and parties.

And the Featherstones aren’t even the first couple to think of this. Mel and Joey Schwanke have been married more than 60 years, and somewhere around their 30th anniversary they just decided, “We should dress a like, all the time.”

“We both have very strong identities as individuals and wearing the same clothes doesn’t affect this; clothes don’t make your personality,” Nancy said. “Instead, dressing the same gives me a lovely feeling of closeness to Donald. I’ve never not felt like doing it; we’ve done it for so long now that it would feel unnatural not to.”
