Interracial Family In Cheerios Ad Receives Predictably Intolerant Response

Watch the ad above. Now, did you see anything offensive? Any families being ripped apart or humanity decaying before your very eyes or pink being worn with red? Anything offensive? It’s like a Rorschach test! Except I’m trying to figure out what the hell people are so upset about. I’m going to guess the answer is “no,” because the ad was an incredibly average, “look at how cute this kid is, also buy our product” commercial for Cheerios. However, plenty of folks find the element of an interracial family offensive. Yes, really. In 2013.

Comments were reportedly getting so racist and bigoted that they had to be suspended. The discussion is still rolling onward via Reddit, so if you feel like voicing a complaint against this ad, then please, peace off our site and go get e-livid there. To be fair, many of the comments’ sentiments are just, “Meh,” but there’s also plenty of folks complaining about the specific mix of white woman/black man as opposed to different interracial combinations, as well as others still who have issues with the idea as a whole.

As I’ve mentioned before, I come from parents in an interracial marriage, and as a result, I am admittedly rather defensive about the idea that somehow, two people shouldn’t be together because of how they look, where they’re from or what label people decide to slap on them. But lately, I have seen an increase in television shows with interracial relationships, and that is a wonderful thing; considering how many people have been or presently are in them, it’s important for the entertainment industry, as well as marketers, to not simply ignore the existence of interracial partners.

Advertising has been lagging with regard to this (hey, maybe they’ll compete with the fashion industry to be the slowest turtle!), so it was nice to see an ad like this for a large company. Despite the awful response from some, I’m sure it was given two thumbs up by many, many more people — or, perhaps even better, went totally unnoticed because it shouldn’t be an issue whatsoever.

Yay! More families with kids that look like me!

Seriously though, you guys need to figure this stuff out. We’ve had interracial families/couples in commercials for a while and no one bats an eyelash. I also find it weird that commercials made in the UK have the voices redone to remove the British accents on US channels. The exact same commercial in Canada has the original British voices.

I remember watching a british tv show and they put on subtitles. granted i’m a bit of an anglophile but is america really that isolated we can’t tell what they’re saying in a different accent?

    • JLH1986

No…but the same dipshits who bitch about an interracial family would probably be complaining they couldn’t understand or “this is ‘Murica, speak ‘Murican!”

      *Sigh*
      You’re so right.

Actually the movie Attack the Block was a huge hit in the UK about aliens invading. American movie studies refused to bring it over here and put it in theaters because they thought no one would watch the movie with subtitles because they thought we wouldn’t be able to understand the accents or slang.

They translate books from UK English into American English, too. Like the Harry Potter books and Terry Pratchett’s books.

I LOVE IT! ? nice to see some the rest of the world reflected on tv. I have nothing against all white, blond, blue eyed families, but they aren’t the only ones buying things. I also have a problem with contests for a trip, for a family of 4, seeing as how I have a family of 5. But that’s a rant for another day.

She is so cute, And the ad is cute too….so what’s the fuss. Though I have no kids, my marriage is interracial; I’m Filipino, my husband is Irish-American.

  • Aiden

I have been watching this commercial for the past week or so, and I never realized that the mom was white. I’m being completely serious. I feel like I never would have noticed even it hadn’t been pointed out to me.

  • Tania

I don’t understand why this is an issue. I know almost as many mixed race (mostly white and Asian of various origins, but whatever) people as non-mixed people. I feel sick that people are so offended by something that is just such a non-issue.

  • Solomon

No problem here. This ad was cute; a lot better than an all white bread ad too.

  • Michelle Nelson Whittum

whats funny is I’ve only ever heard this commercial (usually in the kitchen making food) and I had never seen it until now and when the dad wakes up with cereal on his heart, I literally laughed out loud! Super cute commercial! And, again, I really hate people sometimes, if you can call them that.

I liked the ad just fine. As for Youtube? I long since have realized that all you have to do to confirm the suspicion that humanity is doomed is just read the comment on ANY video displayed on Youtube.

ASIA FOR THE ASIANS, AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS, WHITE COUNTRIES FOR EVERYBODY!

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.

Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.

What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?

How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?

And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?

But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.

    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.

Obvious troll is obvious. FFS, man, pull it together.

So, you just go off on a long rant that is nothing more than a personal attack.

You need to examine your conscience.

      Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.

    • SirEdwardTrollington

You say that as though you were working with a cogent thought process, you silly old xenophobe, you.

Let’s see… Your Klan-style proclamation at the expense of entire races of people versus my accurate (and entertaining, I might add) assessment at the expense of one nut job on the Internet. Thanks for the concern, but I believe my conscience is functioning quite well indeed.

[Insert catchphrase here] – sorry, I haven’t come up with one worthy of repeating in every post ad nauseum just yet.

    • SirEdwardTrollington

Obvious troll is obvious. FFS, man, pull it together.

  • NoWhiteGenocide

Flooding ALL White countries and ONLY White countries with non-Whites and then forcing assimilation is a program of White genocide.

Africa will still be full of Africans
Asia will still be full of Asians.
Only White children will suffer from this.

Read the UN genocide conventions: It is genocide, White Genocide.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-White.
    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.

Everybody is not offended by the ad….folks get over it already
