Roberto Cavalli, the go-to designer for when Versace is just a little too understated, is probably not going to get the call to dress Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge any time soon. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been thinking about it, because he really thinks the duchess should be showing off the goods a bit more.
“A princess should be sexy,” he said in an interview with British Vogue. “She is young, she is beautiful—I would like to create something special for her, but nothing too bold. I would like to prove to the world that Roberto Cavalli can dress a princess.”
We admit the idea of a Roberto Cavalli princess has piqued our interest. But what would a one-off Kate Middleton Cavalli look like?
“Maybe I would use a print, keeping it young, sophisticated and sexy,” he mused. “Just because you are a queen or princess it doesn’t mean you can’t be sexy.”
A sexy dress with a print … so just regular Cavalli then?
As much as we love imagining what the Queen would say if Kate Middleton just decided to go crazy sexpot to a polo match some day, Cavalli might have a long wait before that happens. While princesses can certainly be sexy, as a group they don’t exactly tend towards the kind of sparkly animal prints and embellished cut-outs that made Cavalli famous.
But that’s OK, because he does have some devoted fans, including his favorite British woman of all time, Victoria Beckham.
“Victoria Beckham, she is in my heart,” he said. “I remember when she asked me to design the Spice Girls costumes for the reunion in 2008, I was so surprised and pleased because I really didn’t like the competition—Dolce & Gabbana. … She represents a little bit of England to me.”
