Were you thinking that it would be nice to just continue having your period forever and ever? Do you think it would be nice to have your first child around the age of seventy (actually sometimes I think that might be quite nice). Well, blame men. Men crushed your dreams. They are the reason menopause exists.
The new working theory is that men and their preference for young mates is what caused us to evolve to become infertile after a certain age. Researchers think that over time, men’s competition for young women made older women’s reproductive organs feel unappreciated therefore causing them to crawl under the bed and die, so to speak.
“If women were reproducing all along, and there were no preference against older women, women would be reproducing like men are for their whole lives,” said Rama Singh, the biologist leading the study.
The problem is not that if we lived in a world populated only by women, we would not have menopause. I mean, we wouldn’t, but we would also die out incredibly quickly. I think this is the premise of a few science fiction movies.
The problem seems to be that if men were not always lusting after young women, we would not have menopause. Stupid men with their stupid affection for young women, that is apparently not based in those young women being more fertile. Men have ruined my dreams of seeing my kid’s high school graduation at 88 (to be fair, I’m planning on living to 150, so it’s not that weird).
